Chloe North pulled her hoodie tighter as she left the café. It wasn’t cold, quite the opposite actually, but she did it on instinct. Everything she knew about running, hiding, remaining unseen in a crowd came from spy movies and so she had dark shades on, a hoodie pulled around her baseball cap, and a backpack. Despite the intention of not drawing notice, she felt like she stood out. Each person who passed her was staring at her, each man in a suit a government agent looking to stop her, and each policeman a second away from slapping cuffs on her. At least, that was how it felt.
Matt Damon made this crap look easy, she thought.
Things hadn’t always been like this. Her paranoia was not a thing, not until she found out she was a Neo-Human. Her whole life she expected to be famous. Maybe her Youtube channel would take off, or an agent would see her headshots, or….something. She never expected fame to be the result of being a freak. Sadly, her power was actually kind of cool. She could heal. Not herself of course, but others. At a touch she could seal wounds, restore lost limbs, eliminate cancer, and more. So naturally despite never considering the medical field, she enjoyed helping people. One video posted to social media later and she thought people would be lining up to make her a star, to help her help people. Instead the government showed up.
She was processed, added to a list, and felt eyes on her at all times. They followed her at work, at school, even to a concert. It took a few weeks but now the government was finally ready to throw her in a cell. She’d had nightmares for weeks of being poked, prodded, and cut up by men in white coats.
Just like that place in Denver, she thought as a shiver ran down her spine.
The news had been nonstop coverage for months of the Denver facility. It seemed like every week a new story of horror came from that place, the fallout of the mass escape still very much on the minds of everyone in the nation. Not that the experiments were center stage, no a lot of people, like those she worked with and went to school with, only feared how many monsters were let out. And being a Neo? Well that made her a monster too.
Scared, jobless, homeless she had only one place to go if she could survive long enough to reach it.
The New Latverian Embassy had opened in New York. People were not happy, politicians complained, and Tony Stark had spoken out against any dealings with the new nation unless it involved hauling their leader in, in chains. There were rumblings though, reports among neo-humans and sympathizers alike that Doctor Doom was offering sanctuary. A place, an entire country where Neos could be themselves. Sure it was weird, the guy was named Doom after all, but she couldn’t help but think it would be better than what she faced now.
Eastern Europe isn’t my first choice, but if it means I don’t have to be autopsied alive I’ll take it.
NEARBY…
A pair of Doombots, their holographic projectors making them look like stereotypical bodyguards in black suits and sunglasses, scanned the crowded streets. They had orders to locate a neo-human and escort her to the New Latverian embassy before she was intercepted by government forces. This particular day was chosen thanks to the large crowds, a result of media coverage of Victor von Doom’s first visit to the United States. The robotic soldiers were completely unaware of just why Doom was offering to take in this or any of the other Neo-Humans and their lack of sentience meant they didn’t care, but they were under orders to deliver the woman to the embassy at any cost.
Others of their kind were no doubt waiting nearby, either to assist in retrieving the girl or as a protective unit for the visiting Doom. Rumors were that someone had taken out a hit on the New Latverian monarch and that any number of assassins from New Earth and elsewhere may have answered the call. Doom himself was unconcerned, such attempts to eliminate the superior minds of the world were nothing new and it all played into his plans. After all, how would the government agents arrest the woman and protect a visiting dignitary that they no doubt despised? No matter the outcome he’d find a way to turn it to his advantage.
