MANTIS
There was a certain irony in it all. Terrans were almost always seen as backwards. They were crude and ill-mannered beings who for the most part didn't understand the basics of space travel shown to the smallest of larvae. Sure, there were the rare ones who ventured out like Peter Quill or Carol Danvers, but most seemed to stay in their own little corner of the galaxy, never reaching even the fourth planet in their solar system.
So it was with regret that she and Rocket Raccoon were stuck here. Regret might not actually be the right word for it. Mantis has spent her formative years on a planet that effectively enslaved her, and Rocket was allegedly from this world too even if he bit anyone who dared mention it. Groot might have regrets too but as he only said three words and it was hard to be empathic with a tree, she wasn't all that sure.
The Guardians, so called and mostly by themselves, had all come to Earth but could not seem to find each other. On this tiny little blue world, they had scattered to the wind in a way that the galaxy itself could not manage. So, three of them: a little fury mammal, a tree man, and an emotion-reading bug, decided to see who else they could adventure with to form the NEW GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY . . . or at least Guardians of Lower Manhattan.
They had managed to rent out an old gym. The smell of sweat and failure still permeated the place. A couple dozen folding chairs graced an area near an old boxing ring lined with red and blue ropes.
"Aloha Groot and Crabby Puppy!" Experience had showed her that this was the normal Earth greeting. "I have returned from the food and drink dispenser. The Earth Credits I received from giving people food gave me these!" Her search had yielded a Schweppes Diet Ale, a Dr. Pepper, Two Pepsis, a bag of Peanut M&Ms, Flamin' Hot Cheetos, and a bag of Act II popcorn (unpopped of course).
After placing them on the long white table, she looked around. "Did we tell no one we would be here?"
