THE RULES OF ROLE PLAY ON WALK IT OFF
- Have fun. This is the penultimate reason of why we are here. This is a hobby, it's not meant to cause stress, it's not so DIRELY serious to warrant rage and grudges. It's a game. Have fun.
- Be respectful. Treat others politely, do not mock, insult, ignore, troll, fight or conduct any other unpleasant and uncooperative behavior. You don't have to like everyone here, but you are expected to conduct yourself as a responsible adult. If you cannot resolve disagreements peaceably, please contact a member of the staff.
- Keep player and character separate. I know this seems fairly obvious but you'd be surprised how often these wires cross. What is said in character stays strictly in character. It has no bearing on the player and if at any point there seems to be cross-contamination, a moderator will intervene and the thread will either be shut down or both parties lose their characters. We must respect and expect everyone to play their characters to their fullest and deepest potential. Just because characters shoot nasty insults at each other does not mean it does -- or ever should -- reflect the personal opinions of their players.
- Respect the rating. We have an M-rated board here, but in order to do that and stay within the guidelines of proboards, we ask you curb the levels of your writing to fit an L3/S2/V3 limit. To clarify:
- Language is allowed but try and keep the real curse-fest to a minimum. I understand that 'military mouth' is a real thing, but use it as a good writer should and only for dramatic effect where needed. Do not attempt to write around the censors that are in place.
- Hate slurs, racial, sexual or otherwise, will not be tolerated.
- Sensual writing is permitted but only sensual. Heavy petting is fine, but explicit details are not allowed. Use your writing ability to make it interesting but not show anything graphic. Any pornographic content will be immediately deleted and the members banned. If you truly wish to ERP, take it to PM. This is strictly limited to in-character interactions and there must come a point where you simply fade to black. Any out of character behavior of this nature will net you a ban.
- We've got characters that get cut up into pieces, shed their skin, or turn into flaming skeletons. Gore comes with the territory. Just don't try to recreate the events of Wolf Creek in text, please.
- No god-modding. No power-gaming, no meta-gaming. Two strikes and you're out. Examples are, but not limited to:
- Having your character be all-powerful.
- Deciding the repercussions of your character's actions. (You can have your character throw a punch, but not have it hit unless you have permission of the other player beforehand. In such cases, indicate this permission was gained with an OOC note at the bottom of your post.)
- Having your character dodge everything.
- Having your character act on knowledge that you -- the player -- knows, but they would have no way of knowing themselves.
- Reading another character's mind unless you have the other player's permission.
- Use Private Messaging. Not really a rule, but very strongly suggested. It is HIGHLY recommended that you always start a thread with a goal in mind. Don't post aimlessly and get frustrated if it goes nowhere. If characters are fighting, chat a bit and get a rough idea of what you want the outcome to be like. If you need information (see above regarding mind reading) ask the other player what information they'd like to volunteer. This is just simple common courtesy.
- Make Everyone Look Good. This rule is unique to WIO. When you are writing a fight or any other situation, we ask that you rise to the challenge and make all characters come out looking like badasses. Unless a bloody, brutal beatdown is what is desired, all characters should come out looking strong, regardless of who wins or loses. This is simply fair and again, part of the common courtesy we all expect to be shared in the WIO community. This means when you write a reaction to some physical feat or taking a hit in a fight, don't brush it off. You cannot also dodge, block, or shrug off every blow sent your way. Take a hit and give some. Fair is fair. Take the time to acknowledge that all the characters here are awesome and deserve respect.
- No RPing with yourself. Solo posts are fine when needed and can help prevent arcs from getting bogged down, but the point is to role play with others -- not commit literary masturbation.
- When taking a canon, you cannot learn powers that are not originally inherent to or directly related to their original canon skill and power set. Exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis IF there is precedent in mainstream canon. This means Iron Man can't start casting spells like Zatanna or making Lantern rings. While we all love character development, one character cant be a jack of all trades. Stick to your archetype. This is also fairly obvious under the 'no power-gaming' rule.
- You cannot kill a canon character or official NPC without permission of the staff and the owner of said character/NPC.
- Keep your writing neat, clean, professional. No posts should be less than 200 words.
- In the title of each thread, indicate in (parentheses) if the thread is open or a solo. If these are not used, it is to be assumed that threads are closed and invite-only.
- If a character is speaking in a foreign language, you can -- as in the comics -- indicate they are speaking in something other than English by putting their dialogue in [brackets] like so. ["This indicates I'm speaking in German."] "This indicates I'm speaking English."
- When you are finished with a thread, put END at the bottom of the last post and please tag a member of the staff so that it can be moved into the archived threads section. This just helps keep the forum looking nice and organized.
- Please tag all members involved in a thread at the bottom of every post.
- Please write all stories in third person.
- No text speak. This is legitimate, literate role play, so use spellcheck and check your grammar.
- Keep solo stories to 1 post only and don't use them too often. Yes, sometimes it's just best to say your piece in a one-shot, but using this in an attempt to boost your post count will not work in your favor.
- TEMPING -- if you need a character to cameo in your thread, but they are not picked up by a player, you may loosely write them in for one thread. And please inform staff before doing so. If you unexpectedly need a character to come into your thread that is held by a player, send them a PM and respectfully ask if they can help you out. They are not obligated to do so and in such cases, simply come to an agreement on what needs to happen to get a thread moving again. Take the initiative.
- You may have more than one thread at once. So long as you know the general outcomes of your other on-going threads, you do not need to feel like you're strictly adhering to a streaming time-line. We are not re-enacting comic book stories so don't feel bound to them. Explore, create, innovate.
- Please keep your tracker and plotters up to date as it helps us organize site plots and the site timeline.
CHARACTERS, POST COUNT, REQUIREMENTS
GENERAL RULES
GRAPHICS RULES
- Before applying for an additional character you must have a 10 post count limit with the character you already have. This is not cumulative between all your accounts -- it must be with the newest character.
- When you have reached 10 posts, you may unlock another character slot and apply for an additional character.
- When FIRST joining the site, you may have 2 canon characters -- one from DC and one from Marvel -- OR you may apply for ONE original character. The choice is yours.
- You may have up to 10 characters.
- We expect you to post at minimum once a month, per character. Failure to keep up with activity requirements will result in possible loss of that character. If you cannot keep up with character posts, you are free to drop a character at any time.
- When making a new thread, the time/season is always 'now' in the real world. We know it can take months to finish a thread -- but the time will always be around the season/month of when the first post was made.
GENERAL RULES
- When applying for a character, you MUST follow the application template that can be found here. Read the character creation rules first.
- Make a new account for each new character. To do this, simply logout, then login as a guest. Register under the same email but different username as is applicable for your character.
- You may have, on first registration, one application for a character from DC and Marvel at once, OR one original character. After you have a character, it is 10 posts until you are able to pick up a second character. This is not cumulative between accounts, but dependent on each individual account.
- We have a 'first come, first serve' basis here. Multiple WIP applications can be submitted, but the first one to be finished and passed will win the character. Drag your feet, lose your seat.
- We ask that you make 1 post every week. That's only 4 posts a month, not very much at all! If you cannot make posts due to technical difficulties, family matters, or other circumstances, please post an absence thread and keep it updated. Otherwise, after 1 month, your accounts will be deleted and your characters put back on the market.
- If a player is active with other accounts, but is letting a character with active threads collect dust, staff will send a reminder. If these reminders are ignored, the threads will be moved to inactive and the character put back up for grabs.
- Plagiarism is NOT permitted. Cite your sources, whether they be in you application for a character or your posts. If you are caught plagiarizing someone else's work, you will be reproached and given the option of a public apology to the members of the forum or a permanent ban. A second offense will receive no such offer and no warning will be given. You will simply be banned.
- If there are any problems with role-playing, or if you are uncomfortable with how other people may be treating you in role-playing, please do not hesitate to approach the staff and have things sorted out quickly, fairly, and peaceably. That's what we're here for.
- Have fun. That's what we're here for, after all. This is the most important goal; we come here to relax, to escape, to unwind. Real life checks out when you log in. Write. Explore. Kick ass. Have fun.
