Location: Alaska
The frozen tundras in the apocalyptically icy wasteland of Alaska, they had chosen this place for their 'research center', halfway between Atqasuk and Muiqsit. That specific location, enjoying a period of 82 days of uninterrupted daylight in the summer and 66 of darkness in the winter, had been chosen as the perfect region for such a base, the long summer allowing for a rapid and continuous construction, the winter allowing for increased security, not to keep things from getting in, but rather make sure subjects had no motivation or hope to fuel attempts to get out.
Not much in the way of organic life could live outside of what had become known as 'Echo' Base, the strange acoustics granted by its unique construction and size, long corridors lined with labs and cells, moans and creaks giving it its eerie namesake. Those stationed there even going so far as to draw the parallel to being stationed in the 'Frigid northern s***hole of Hoth'.
Surprisingly, for a military complex, it had only a small contingent of 'regular' forces, most who's duty was to 'protect' the base, though becoming somewhat derelict in the face of reality, aside from displaying some amount of presence at the main gates, most tower sentries had been long since replaced with makeshift dummies dressed in military fatigues, even the officers coming to turn a blind eye to the negligent attitude in a gamble to keep up moral, struggling to keep their troops from growing mad with the 70 day rotations, with the given exception of a few 'specialists' who, for their sins, where only relieved every 110, or when they became unable to perform their duties.
The scientists and research staff appearing to weather much better, their accommodations having all the luxuries of normal life, even the implemented technology to simulate night and day, altering the environmental climate to make them more comfortable, and provided with recreation opportunities. Not that they were overly used, the work and subjects of their fields, along with being given almost full free reign to play, allowing for their obsessive nature in the demand for knowledge to take hold.
All in all the compliment of 172 persons on base, along with the 36 remaining 'non-persons', accounted for almost all of the life on base, the rest being biological and bio-organic weapons, viruses and other contagions, the main focus of the base being that for a 'safer' implementation of organic weapons. After all, there was next to no risk of a widespread outbreak, given the nature of the base's location, and in the event of an issue, they need only cut the power and wait 7 days for the base to go 'Cold' before sending in HazMat teams to secure and cleanse it.
The military presence's general orders where to keep the base secure and operational, and to tend to the needs of the research staff, standard procedure to send base updates and situational reports every 8 hours. The base commander was required to keep a journal to keep his relief informed of the 'feel and pulse' of what was happening, some adhering to this 'suggestion' better than others, it came to few involved as a surprise that the military presence became seen more as caretakers and custodians.
With everything running smoothly, or as smoothly as could be expected given the logistical nightmares initially encountered, the base produced promising results, that is until they received the 'memetic polymer', a canister of thick black fluid, taken for study by a research team in the outlying regions of the area, observing it attempting to approach them with tendrils and moving with a life of its own, but ultimately unable to achieve its goal before capture.
Initially they tested for intelligence, but the fluid seemed unwilling to do as they hoped, testing it with shocks and shaped containers, trying to make it take form, having less than stellar results until they 'accidentally' introduced it to a rabbit, one of the team suggesting that they try something live as it showed activity before capture, and possibly that it was the team themselves that caused the response. The fluid weakly capturing the rabbit, coating it with a layer of itself, before spontaneously abandoning it a few minutes later, only this time with increased rapidity of its movements, the development showing 'promise'.
This however turned out to be the last report from the base for an extended time, and after attempting contact for 48 hours, a recon team, composed primarily specialists waiting to be rotated and adamant in convincing the brass of their competence, where sent in, to ascertain the situation and response from the base, their reports coming through of what appeared to be unwounded bodies scattered both inside and outside of the base, bullet holes in the walls and other signs of conflict, and almost all power was out, the emergency generators running to provide heat to the habitat area, the labs frozen over all subjects dead, and samples ruined, frozen where they lay.
The team continued to report routinely for several hours, making mention of shattered containment cells, the thick plexiglas burst from the inside, but the occupants still within. In the hours that followed, communication came in brief moments of screams, gunfire, crying or pleading... Some making mention of the shadows being alive, others of living walls and objects. The decision being made to let the base go cold and cleanse it after the week, they had lost a team of specialists, and now that the reason for the contingency became abundantly clear, it was time to implement it, surely nothing could survive in that climate for 3 days, yet alone a week. Yet the call went out for some 'extra muscle', and perhaps, someone to pin the blame on if things went south, With JSOC* answering. Them having just the right 'muscle' in mind, and, from their after action reports, possibly even the 'optional requirement'.
