Seven days. One week. It wasn't an exaggeration that he was one of the only soldiers the US Army had that could pull a watch that long while still running on all cylinders. Surely there were those that could stay awake that long, but in the end the mind and body began to slow down. It reduced their efficiency. For Steve Rogers, it was like an hour had gone by. He'd arrived at the Acadia National Forest, as stated, one week prior, under the guise of a private man on a much needed vacation. In that time, he'd set up a mild mannered campsite, with a tent, hammock, fire pit, and even a bird feeder. But never once did he fall asleep or take his eyes off the lodge just north and down a steep slope from his spot.
Intelligence had discovered a neohuman who, unfortunately for himself and just about every other neo he shamed, was very aggressive with his anti-government tendencies. He was, by every meaning of the word, a terrorist. This one had founded himself his own little organization primarily populated by regular humans. For whatever reason they shared his desire to drag the world into chaos. They'd tracked him down to Maine, a base he'd established deep in the national park and away from public eye. It seemed the park rangers had either been bought out or threatened to silence, allowing them to dwell more or less in peace. This neohuman was smart enough, at least, to realize a certain level of privacy would suit him best.
The mission was to locate and capture, or kill, the leader of this tribe of terrorists. Captain America inserted on foot and established a base for himself. The neo was out of state up until recently, so Steve needed to wait for him to arrive before engaging. Of course he had to identify the target first. That wasn't the hard part. The hard part would be sneaking in, grabbing or eliminating the neo, and getting out, all without being detected. Command wanted "no human casualties" on this mission, for reasons Steve could only speculate, but those instructions made this job far more difficult than it should have been. That, and they didn't know what his powers were. He was going in more or less blind with the hope that he could knock out the target without conflict.
But that was where his backup came in. He'd met her once already, and as soon as he was given the mission he asked for her specifically. He told command his reasons were that Overgirl was a powerhouse who could not only help identify the target but also potentially grab him and tear him away from the skirmish zone with little difficulty, but what he didn't tell them was that he was eager to have a chance to talk to Overgirl privately. Ever since meeting her when Bruce Banner stumbled into this world, he'd become very curious as to what she knew of the world. And what they weren't telling her. It took some convincing, but in the end his overseer's agreed to the request. She would be meeting him there today.
It was very early morning. The sun had yet to peak over the mountains, and even if it had, a low hanging roof of misty clouds hugged the horizon. The sky had taken to a dark purple haze, contrasting with the bright green tree leaves that seemed black in the darkness. Still, Steve peered at the compound with his binoculars, crouched on one knee. The lodge had been walled on all sides by wood, with three watchtowers at each corner. There was one gate that led to the main road, heavily guarded by men with machine guns. One side brushed up against a flowing river that ran down the mountain side. The building itself was like a large, two storied log cabin, with smaller adjacent buildings acting as storage for vehicles.
The neo hadn't arrived yet, but Steve had learned he'd be with a convoy of other vehicles when they arrived. Like he knew they were waiting for him. Steve would be unable to identify him immediately, so Overgirl should hopefully be able to speed up the process. She would be arriving shortly, if things went according to plan, before the neo and his entourage would. After that... Steve could only guess how long it'd be before the plan went straight to the gutter.
