Physical Appearance: Mantis is a 'gross bug lady'. She is roughly humanoid, with bilteral symmetry, two arms and two legs. She stands about the same height as Gamora. She has hair, long and black. Mantis has human-colored skin, very large black irises and two long fleshy antennae that form at the top of her forehead. The antennae are free-moving and glow at the ends when she is using her empathic abilities. She tends to wear green.



Personality:
Mantis' personality is largely shaped by her lifetime of isolation. She seems anything around her as new, fascinating, and exciting, because most experiences beyond living on her adoptive homeworld/father-figure Ego are new to her. She has no concept of social propriety, both due to the isolation and the fact that as an empath, she knows the moods of her world and his guests, she to keep them hidden from anyone doesn't make much sense to her. Having spent most of her life serving Ego, she has trouble with acting on her own free will and desires. Her desperate need to have friendship has been largely met with the Guardians, but she still dislikes making enemies.


Powers:
Empathy: Mantis can feel other beings' emotions. She has demonstrated the ability to both detect baseline emotions (love or joy, for example), and to feel that emotion herself, laughing along with Drax, for example.

She can alter other beings' emotions as well. She tends to soften them. An angry man will become calmer, a sad woman will become less so. She can change emotions to increase aggression or to accelerate fear as well, but she is less experienced in this as she rarely needed to do so day to day with Ego.

She can make induce sleep in others. When she did this on someone as large as Drax, it was instantaneous, so may be on smaller beings. However, he was willing. On an unwilling subject, like Ego, it was very taxing for her.

Durability: Mantis is more durable than a normal human would be. She made a fall of hundreds of feet without aid, the same as Drax and Gamora.



Abilities: Given that she was Ego's servant, she likely has the ability to maintain a mansion.



Weapons/Equipment: Mantis does not usually use weapons or equipment. If she needs either she would probably just get them from the other Guardians. They tend to have firearms and jet packs.


History: Mantis had lived most of her life on and around Ego, the Living Planet on a planetoid about the size of the Moon. She stated that he found her when she was a larvae, orphaned. While on/with the celestial, she aided Ego in his plot to remake the universe in his image. He was, after all, all that she had and knew. Her world was very limited during this time. She lived on Ego's service, tended to his needs, and helped him when he was restless. 

Ego found one of his sons, Star-Lord. He heard that he had held an Infinity Stone without dying and believed that this meant that Quill could fulfill Ego's plan to conquer the universe and sought him out. The Guardians were aided by Ego and lead to his surface. After bonding with them, she felt a terrible guilt about Ego's plot and betrayed his secrets to them.

After aiding in his defeat, she was welcomed into their bizarre family. They traveled the galaxy far and wide, until their ship crashed landed on a new planet. It's supposedly Earth but according to Peter, there's a lot weird with it.

Weaknesses: Mantis cannot use her empathic abilities without physically touching the subject. Her abilities would be of little use against emotionless beings, such as Sentinels. She also would not be able to use her abilities against those who could block her powers outright, as with most full telepaths.

She has very little combat experience, especially compared to the other Guardians.

Mantis is completely naive about how any world which is not Ego works. This can get her into a lot of trouble on a planet like Earth.
