WRAITH
Real Name: Emma Fielding Alias: Wraith
Title: Unknown
Identity: Secret
Age: 28
Species: Neo Human
Physical Appearance: Emma is a beautiful woman, almost unimaginably pale, her looks are a large reason she’s mistaken for a ghost, pale skin, pale hair pale eyes, everything about her is soft and pale, almost as if she’d wisp away from existence with a strong wind. Her skin is very pale, in part due to her family, the women in her family have always been pale, and in part because she gets very little sun. Her eyes are a very soft Icy blue and her hair is the softest wheat gold color.
She has a frail willowy frame and moves with a dancer like grace. Having been quiet sickly early in life Emma has maintained a very delicate look, she’s not at all at full health suffering from a hereditary heart problem that prevents her from exerting herself to much. She tends to favour white or light colored clothing because it is what she has always known as part of the research project she was involved in. High necklines, long sleeves, billowing skirts or loose slacks, she is always covered. Because of how pale she is, she’s very susceptible to sunburn and must be very careful during the day.
Personality: Emma is as soft in personality as she is in looks. She’s a curious sort, and uses her powers to explore where ever she can. She has long since resigned herself to the fact she will never leave the city and so she chooses to explore it, wanting to know all of it, every nook and cranny. Her power makes this easy. However if she sees something objectionable she has put in anonymous tips to inform authorities to ensure something is done about it. However for cases like child abuse she has come out herself, playing the part of the angry ghost to scare away the abuser and protect the child. She despises people who hurt children, her experiences with the research she was involved with has made her rather protective of the other subjects, and as a byproduct any child who is abused or neglected.
She speaks with a soft easy tone and at times can come across quiet motherly, particularly when dealing with people who are younger or who act younger than her. She has a level of maturity beyond her years due to circumstance and lives in a constant state of resignation. She has no hopes for anything, she doesn't dream of anything because she knows nothing will ever change for her, all she can do is please herself with her wanderings and reading.
Unfortunately due to her past Emma has, episodes. Her memory is not the best and at time she can become lost in herself repeating a mindless activity over and over again or staring at something without seeing it. But her worst moment are when her little ticks build up into one big event where she reduced to a non functioning shell, she won’t eat won’t sleep and becomes completely unresponsive. It usually takes one of the other subjects remembering her or saying her name to snap her out of it. When she hasn’t sunk into one of these episodes she sees herself as the protector of the other subjects. Being the most mentally capable she views their care as her responsibility. If one of them is having an episode she will comfort them, if one refuses to eat she will coax them to do so. In reality there is very little she can do for them because of how detached they are from reality.
Powers:
Intangibility: Emma has the ability to control the tangibility of her body, essentially allowing her to walk through walls and float. Emma's power is controllable in that she can pick and choose when she can and can’t be solid, she cannot however control it in parts; basically either she is completely solid, or not.
When she goes intangible she can put a part of her body into someone and go solid partially, not just her hand partially but her whole body gets trapped between solid and intangible causing the victim extreme pain Like a very severe muscle cramp, Unfortunately it hurts her that way as well so she reserves doing this for extreme emergencies. It's usually reserved for rapists or (attempted) murderers. She's used it exactly four times since she started leaving the facility at night to explore.
While she largely has control of her abilities there are times when she might suddenly shift without meaning to, usually if greatly startled (Loud unexpected noises tend to make it happen most often). This can occasionally protect her from any unexpected attacks theoretically but more likely, she would be struck Mid-Phase, hurting both her and her attacker. If she’s attacked from behind or doesn’t know the attack is coming at all she won’t know to phase.
On the positive side, While intangible Emma is not effected by environmental problems, Heat, cold, any noxious or dangerous gasses, have little to no effect though she finds in the cold she’s less see through. She also eventually will need food and water so staying intangible indefinitely is not an option. Because gasses and general environmental factors don’t affect her, she could help people who are affected by such things, getting them away from, for example, gas leaks or burning buildings by simply phasing them and getting them through the walls.
Floating: When intangible Layla can sort of fly. It’s more of a floating. Gravity does not seem to affect her the same way, when she is seen using her abilities she almost looks like she’s under water because of the way he hair and clothing floats around her. In order to get distance and some speed while floating she'll switch between being solid and not just long enough for her feet to touch the surface and push herself off giving her the force to get farther as soon as she goes intangible. When walking or running, the movement of her legs without going solid seems to be enough to keep her from sinking into the ground.
Abilities: Emma has no extra abilities outside of her powers
Weapons/Equipment: Emma has no weapons or equipment
History: Emma was an accident, and her parents never tried hiding that. She was completely unplanned, the .001% chance of being born through all their strict birth control methods. Short of invasive surgery of course, because frankly they couldn’t afford the time away from their research both parents are devoted to studying impacts on human psyche. Abortion was discussed and then ultimately discarded as an option because if nothing else a child could carry on their legacy.
Unfortunately Emma did not fit anything they had expected for the child. Logically a child needed attention and tending, but rather than being satisfied with nannies the baby seemed to react better to them. Around this time they were pitching a new focus for their newest research topic. The effects of indifference and abject ignorance, on a child's psychological development. The board determined it was too risky of a project to get funding for and limited the protect. Determined to have as many results as possible Emma was added to the subject roster.
No one is quite certain of the purpose of this particular research path and most of the notes were lost or destroyed following the discovery and dismantling of the project. One thing was clear the study had drastic and terrible results on the subjects, children ranging between 10 and 4 years of age, so deeply traumatized and psychologically broken that many had gone catatonic. The study was discovered and dismantled following the suicide of an older test subject.
All the subjects including Emma were taken into the companies protective custody and given housing in a support facility as most of the subjects where catatonic anyway, it was noted that while she suffered ill effects of the research Emma had actually survived better than the others. Being able to still communicate clearly, and take care of herself to a degree, was significantly better than the others however, due to the mental issues she had developed (and possibly the CEOs making sure the project was never discovered to give the company a bad reputation), she was kept in housing like the others.
Emma discovered her powers during a housing shuffle.
The night after her and the others were relocated to a smaller facility Emma could hear the girl in the room next to hers having a complete mental breakdown, however the staff here where not as well equipped to deal with these kids as the place before. Emma pressed as close to the wall shouting reassurances through the wall before promptly falling through it and collapsing on the other girl. They struggled a bit before the girls mind seem to clear enough to focus on Emma she smiled faintly and then slid back into a clam but vacant state and drifting to sleep.
Discovering her abilities opened up a whole new world to Emma, and at night she would pass through her room window and began exploring the city. She'd never been outside her rooms before and it was amazing and terrifying to see. She learned a lot through the books she read but reading about something and seeing it was so different. Rumors spread through the ward that a ghost haunted the halls and it made her laugh, because she knew there was no ghost, it was people catching quick glimpses of her passing through walls to go out at night, of course she never said it. Her own parents had done terrible things to her thinking she was human, whatever she was, she didn't want any other things done to her.
While her time as a research subject had made it difficult for her to learn how to speak she was able to pick up a few things from researchers talking amongst each other, to nurses and investigators trying to talk to them after the project was shut down. Her speech was largely limited however but since discovering her power it has expanded by a but through her reading, wandering, and observing classes where she wouldn’t be discovered.
So far, no one at the facility has found out about her nightly wanderings. She slips out at night the staff in the facility her and the subjects are kept now don't even bother with bed check seeing them all as vegetables. She sometimes joins others in the roof garden during the day to sit and read but most often stays in her room because her skin is quite sensitive to sunlight and she burns easily.
Weaknesses:Aside from her power Emma is a mortal woman and if she's solid she can be hurt and killed quite easily. Her pale skin does cause her grief when outdoors during the day, she burns very easily and so often spend time inside during the day. If she chooses to go outside she remains well covered and sits under an umbrella to stay in the shade even going to far as wearing sunglasses to protect her eyes which are sensitive to the bright sunlight. She usually goes out in the mornings and early evening as that’s when the sunlight is weakest.
Because of her situation her speech and communication is not perfect, she at times can speak to quietly and has difficulty with new words. Though she is often looking to expand her vocabulary and is quiet smart mentally, being able to translate her thoughts to speech is difficult. At times she might not make the most sense because her train of thought goes beyond her power of speech.
Electricity can still effect Emma while she’s intangible and can cause her to lose control going between solid and not if hit with a strong enough current. Thankfully, passing through things like wires in homes does not seem to cause this but, should she for example be hit by a taser even while intangible, or someone with electrical based powers, it would not only cause her to jump between solid and not, but it would also cause injury as one would expect of an electrical attack.
With all the stress and depression of her early life and current living situation Emma is quite mentally delicate; while she sinks gradually into her depressive unresponsive states extreme stress or violent situations can cause her to freeze up, unsure how to act or react t the situation. She’s almost always tempted to flee but if the situation means a child is in danger she can push through her fear however her focus struggles and she’ll forgo her own protection to ensure the safety of the child.
While Emma can make things intangible while touching them if she tries, she is limited. She only has the ‘strength’ to make up to three full grown adults intangible along with herself. She has to try as well, meaning a person can't grab onto her and join the ground, their hand will simply pass through as soon as she changes over.
If Emma or anyone she's helping for any reason begin to go solid again while any part of their body is still inside something solid (eg, a wall, a floor, another body), they will feel a horrible pain like an incredibly severe sharp muscle cramp. The more of their body, the greater and stronger the pain; it can even be crippling for a time.
Emma is incredibly timid but desperate to be remembered by someone. She knows the other subjects remember her because sometimes when their having good days they will smile at her, or mumble her name, but never much more than that. The workers at the facility don’t help at all doing the minimum amount of work possible seeing Emma and the others as a bunch of thoughtless vegetables. They simply don't care their jobs are just to make sure the subjects are fed and kept alive with minimal effort. Emma doesn't realize this and believes they have simply forgotten she exists.
Emma is very afraid of psychiatrists. Her parents worked in studying mental health and psychiatric disorders and experimented on such things. their experiment on her has lead to her fearing Psychologists and in a lesser way any other doctor. The treatment from their current caretakers, including forgetting them at times, has not helped Emmas opinion.
Other Information: Emma was never taught to swim, as a result she avoid water, it hasn’t occurred to her that with her intangible abilities she could just drift back up out of the water and be fine.
Emma enjoys reading and if in her exploration she finds a place with a lot of book she will return there several times so that she can read the books.
