ROCKET RACCOON
Real Name: 89P13 (Halfworld Experiment Number)
Alias: Rocket Raccoon a.k.a Rocky
Identity: Public (in space)
Age: Unknown
Species: Genetically Modified/Enhanced Raccoon (but don’t tell him that!)
Physical Appearance:
"Ain't no thing like me, except me!"
Rocket closely resembled regular Earth raccoon complete with claws, tail, whiskers, and fur. Unlike regular raccoons, Rocket stands upright and walks bipedal for the most part despite being able to run on all fours and move like the forest animal he used to be prior to experimentation. He tends to wear space worthy jumpsuits typically sticking with an orange and black or blue number, but has been known to wear the colors of the Ravagers and others when necessary. Rarely does he wear boots or other footwear. Scars and metal nodes and modules line his back, evidence of the torturous experiments that turned him into what he is, though they are usually hidden beneath his clothing. He is almost never without a large firearm and isn’t above wearing armor when available.
Personality:
"Drax the Destroyer: This vermin speaks of affairs he knows nothing about!
Rocket Raccoon: That is true!
Drax the Destroyer: He has no respect!
Rocket Raccoon: That is also true!"
Rocket is a bitter and cynical misanthrope who dislikes society at large. The torture of the genetic and cybernetic experiments performed on him while on Halfworld has left him an untrusting individual who is quick to anger and is not afraid to speak his mind. He is blunt to the point of being extremely rude and lacks any kind of filter. A badass that knows he is one, Rocket goes out of his way make sure everyone else knows it to whether it is via bragging or proving it, typically via explosions. Rocket tends to look out for himself and Groot, his best friend, first with little care about what happens to others as he is motivated by survival and monetary gain…or so it would seem.
In actuality, Rocket is haunted by the experiments that created him and has adopted the mercenary mindset in order to cope. Angry and alone with no one else like him in the universe, his loneliness, aggression, and sarcasm is largely designed to shove people away as he feels he is a freak that cannot be liked or loved despite desperately craving it. He cares perhaps too much and thus masks his feelings from all, lashing out in bouts of random violence, incredibly hurtful remarks, and embracing the outlaw criminal lifestyle to the point that he steals when it is not necessary. Despite efforts to hide it, his heroic nature still shines through more often than not, even if his view of the law is skewed. For all his flaws, Rocket truly does care about his friends, especially long time pal Groot.
Incredibly sensitive about what he is, insults such as referring to him as a rodent, vermin, or other type of lower life form brings out his hair-trigger temper.
Powers:
Physical Augmentation- a combination of neural implants, genetic manipulation, and cybernetic enhancements have left Rocket with intelligence rivaling or surpassing a human’s, the ability to walk upright, and enhanced strength and durability. His strength is enhanced to levels that leave him capable of lifting and wielding weapons far larger and heavier than he is, downing opponents several times his size, and allowing him tear about some robots with his bare hands. His durability is such that he has survived various ship crashes, being thrown by Gamora, and even receiving an indirect blast from Ronan the Accuser’s weapon.
Raccoon Physiology and Senses- Rocket is still a raccoon with claws that aid in climbing, agility and speed like the woodland creatures, and an acute sense of smell and hearing and the ability to see in the dark.
Abilities:
Tactical Genius- Rocket has had his intelligence boosted to such a degree that he has been called one of the best tactical minds in the galaxy allowing him to plan out complicated actions to assist in battle, escape, or schemes involving theft. He can also change strategies on the fly
Ace Pilot- Rocket is a skilled pilot capable of operating most space faring vehicles with ease and is the veteran of multiple space battles.
Master Mechanic/Engineer- an expert mechanic and engineer Rocket is well known for scavenging parts from various machinery and making very powerful makeshift weapons as a result. Aside from “MacGyvering” weaponry he’s built computers from scrap, made tools to assist in escape, and can repair even the complicated inner workings of the Milano’s engines. Given even limited material Rocket can assemble something useful for the job at hand.
Expert Marksman- skilled in the use of firearms from around the galaxy he is an amazing shot capable of hitting most targets with ease.
Hand-to-Hand Expert- Rocket is skilled in several forms of martial arts.
Multilingual- like most of the Guardians he has a translator programmed with most known galactic languages, but Rocket is the only person capable of understanding Groot. Whether this is because they share a bond from having worked together for so long or a result of the enhancements he underwent is unknown.
Weapons/Equipment:
BFGs- Rocket almost always has comically oversized guns, cannons, and other firearms on him. Whether it is a plasma rifle with stun and killing modes, a favorite ion cannon, or a pair of laser blasting pistols he loves his weapons and is always on the lookout for newer, more destructive “killware.” Sometimes he even makes his own…like his beloved Hadron Enforcer.
Things that go BOOM!- Rocket loves all manner of things that explode be they bombs, plasma grenades, or even the occasional gas grenade or electrical output device. If it goes boom he either has it, has used it, or wants one.
Aero Rigs- an invention Rocket developed himself, these rigs are capable of shrinking down to a small compact size before expanding around the chest and back of the wearer. They allow for propulsion great enough to reach space, essentially turning them into incredibly versatile jetpacks.
Space Suits: For emergency or for fun these disc shaped devices tend surround the wearer in energy fields that protect them from the harsh environment of space. Though the Milano has its own supply, Rocket tends to carry extra on him just in case.
Gravity Mines- triangular devices capable of creating short range artificial gravity fields that can draw enemies together. Rocket altered the units typically used by Star Lord when fighting the Ravagers allowing him to remove gravity and rapidly restore it within the field, lifting enemies high and slamming them down again with great force.
Emergency Shield- a spherical, orange-yellow shield that provides protection for a brief amount of time.
Sladon- a tool that repairs metal on a molecular level, returning it to it’s original strength and consistency, far more effective than a primitive Earth-based welding torch.
History:
89P13 was one of several animal test subjects on Halfworld, subjected to torturous augmentations and experimentation meant to elevate “lower lifeforms” possibly to use as weapons. Having had his genetic code rewritten multiple times and being fused with cybernetic implants allowed the raccoon to gain sentience, a high level of intelligence, and gave him the skills necessary to plan an escape from the facility. Viewed as the only successful experiment, the raccoon, now identifying himself as Rocket, worked alongside Lylla , a similarly “uplifted” otter, to escape before she could be terminated for being a failed experiment. Creating a wrist mounted computer from scraps he stole between upgrade sessions, Rocket hacked the cells and ran, destroying the robotic drone guards and the main scientist in the process.
Sometime after leaving Halfworld, Rocket encountered the tree-like being Groot, the last member of his species from Planet X. Together the two worked various mercenary and bounty hunter jobs with Groot acting as Rocket’s muscle. This line of work brought them to Xandar where they identified Peter Quill, a human scoundrel known as Star Lord, that the Ravagers had put a bounty on. Unfortunately, Rocket and Groot found themselves in the middle of a conflict between Quill and Gamora, Thanos daughter/assassin, both of which were attempting to sell a mysterious orb-like artifact. In the process all involved were detained by the Nova Corps and sent to the supermax prison known as The Kiln.
No stranger to incarceration (he had escaped 22 prisons previously) Rocket developed a plan of escape, working in alliance with Quill, Gamora, and fellow prisoner Drax the Destroyer in order to break free of the prison. Convinced that selling the orb to the Collector and splitting the profits was more valuable than collecting the bounty on Peter, Rocket and Groot accompanied the group to Knowhere. Discovering that the orb contained an Infinity stone, Rocket was soon thrust into the conflict to recover it from Ronan the Accuser. Going against his better nature to save Star Lord and Gamora and despite having reservations about facing off against Ronan, Rocket agreed to follow Star Lord into battle to save the galaxy, nearly losing Groot in the process.
Having helped save Xandar from destruction alongside the other Guardians of the Galaxy, Rocket, now with his criminal record expunged, stayed with the group. Not content with the payout from helping the Sovereign defeat the interdimensional beast known as the Abilisk, a creature that fed upon their precious batteries, Rocket pocketed several of the batteries himself after insulting the easily slighted Sovereign Priestess Ayesha. Pursued by the Sovereign and inadvertently causing the Milano to crash, Rocket was left behind with baby Groot to repair the ship and guard the captive Nebula. Unfortunately, Nebula’s betrayal and the arrival of the Ravagers ended with Rocket, Groot, and Ravager leader Yondu captured by the mutinous crew.
Escaping captivity just in time to race across the galaxy to save Peter from his Celestial father Ego, Rocket came to understand that he and Yondu were cut from the same cloth, both afraid to love and be loved in return due to the horrible circumstances of their beginnings. Though he played a pivotal role in the battle against Ego by developing the bomb that would eventually destroy the living planet, he sadly had to leave Yondu with his last remaining Aero-Rig, knowing full-well his newfound friend would not survive. Rocket having learned a little humility and that the Guardians, his family, would stand by him even when he was terrible to them, returned to the ship and broadcast news of Yondu’s redemptive sacrifice to the other Ravager groups, securing him a proper Ravager funeral.
Since then Rocket has been traveling with the Guardians, taking jobs that do good while allowing him to be bad, and enjoying being part of a team. With Groot now regrown to full size and prices surging for the two-time galaxy savers, things were looking up…right until a job investigating strange anomalies for the Nova Corp ended with Rocket separated from the team on a strange planet filled with humans, subpar firearms, and nothing even remotely cool! Now he must find his friends, regroup, and figure out how to keep on saving the galaxy…as long as it is profitable of course.
Weaknesses:
Raccoon- despite his enhancements, Rocket is still a raccoon meaning he is smaller and more frail than his average superhuman counterpart. His short stature can be an impediment when he needs to reach something up high or when facing enemies far larger than he is.
Egotistical Jerk- Rocket is so used to being alone and having to survive in a galaxy that views him as a freak, he tends to think about himself first and foremost. This means he will often support the more reckless or dangerous course of action if there is more money in it. It also leads to him taking unnecessary risks such as stealing when he doesn’t actually have to just to prove to himself and others how tough and smart he really is. This also means that his first instinct is to lean towards self-preservation, with Groot usually acting as his conscience. In the end his own bravado combined with his tendency to push those who care about him away could prove detrimental to his continued breathing.
Loneliness- Rocket is the only thing like him in the galaxy and he is terrified of being alone. While he claims he doesn’t need anyone and works over time to push people, especially his newfound family (The Guardians) away with his insulting actions and words, truly being alone is a prospect that worries him above all others. This also drives him to be extra protective of Groot as he is his oldest and closest friend.
Laboratories- Due to the experiments he endured on Halfworld and the loss he experienced there, labs and scientist sorts secretly terrify Rocket and he’d do anything to avoid going back to such a facility.
Other Information:
-Rocket is not a big fan of dogs, an instinctual holdover from before he was “elevated”
-He’s trying desperately to make Blam! Murdered You! His catchphrase despite everyone telling him it sucks.
-Earth suuuuuuuuucks! Except for Egg McMuffins.
-Sometimes the concept of the law just makes little sense to him. After all, if he sees something and he wants it more than the person who has it…
