SPIDER-MAN
Real Name: Peter Parker
Alias: Spider-Man (The Amazing, Spectacular, Sensational, pick your adjective!)
Identity: Secret
Age: 30
Species: Human (mutate back home/Neo-Human on New Earth)
Physical Appearance:
Standing at 5’9” Peter is a lithe and lean, built like an acrobat, and completely unaware that he’s actually kind of handsome. With brown hair kept in a short, classic style and almost always clean shaven Peter looks younger than he is and evokes the image of the boy next door rather than the classic image of a superhero. As Spider-Man he wears his now iconic form fitting red and blue costume with raised web-lines segmenting it, the mask sporting large white lenses outlined in black (they actually widen and narrow based on Peter’s expressions), and a spider emblem emblazoned on his chest.
Personality:
Peter Parker’s life is defined by the motto “With Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility” and it is one he takes seriously. A man of strong moral character Parker always tries to do what is right with his conscience and the wisdom of his Uncle Ben acting as his guide. Believing in the sanctity of life, he will not only die protecting the innocent, but steadfastly believes that killing is wrong even when it comes to villains that may deserve it. Best described as a geek even as an adult Peter is not only a fountain of facts no one ever asked for, but also obsessed with learning new things. When he dons his mask to become the Amazing Spider-Man he is a sarcastic quipping machine driving foe and friend alike to distraction. Little do people realize that his joking nature is as much a defense mechanism to keep his own fear in check, as it is an attempt to throw enemies off their game.
Whether he is in or out of costume Peter is courageous, loyal to a fault, and cares deeply about family and friends alike. Though he is much as he was during his teenage years, Peter is a responsible, functioning adult that has grown in confidence both in his personal life and as Spider-Man with connections to many of the super-powered heroes of his universe.
Powers:
Superhuman Strength: he has the proportionate strength of a spider allowing him to lift up to 10 tons when the situation demands it.
Superhuman Agility/Speed/Reflexes: He can leap up to 30 feet, move fast enough to dodge gunfire, perform amazing acrobatic maneuvers impossible for top tier gymnasts to replicate, and has amazing dexterity, balance, and coordination.
Superhuman Durability: he possesses increased vitality and resistance to injury. His healing is accelerated compared to that of a normal human, but is not an actual healing factor, merely cutting down his recovery time and allowing him to survive hits from beings with increased strength that would otherwise kill or severely damage a normal human. Drugs, gases, and diseases seem to last shorter amounts of time on Peter than they would a regular human.
Wall-Crawling: Peter can adhere to nearly any surface with any part of his body allowing him to traverse ceilings and tall structures such as skyscrapers with ease. This seems to work regardless of whether or not he is actually focusing on it.
The Mark of Kaine: Though it is rarely used and does not work in an identical manner to his failed clone Kaine, Spider-Man can when angered and focusing, focus the adhesiveness of his fingers to such a degree that he can ‘mark’ or scar an opponent, the stickiness actually peeling flesh away.
Spider-Sense: a precognitive “danger sense” that warns him of oncoming threats, felt as a tingling in his skull. It allows him to dodge incoming attacks without ever seeing them coming, is sensitive enough that he can sense a mosquito landing on him, and can be attuned to certain radio frequencies allowing him to track them (such as with his spider-tracers). A combination of aging and his "rebirth" when he learned his powers have a mystical aspect as well, has augmented his spider-sense even more allowing him to traverse dark or hazardous environments with ease thanks to an increased psychological awareness of his environment.
Webbing: though not an actual power, Parker utilizes a chemical compound and web-shooters of his own design to fire an adhesive substance similar in nature to a spider’s webbing. He can use these to fire weblines that enable him to swing across a city, ensnare enemies, insulate objects, form a temporary shield, and various other uses. He has also adopted the rapidly expanding impact webbing his clone Ben Reilly first developed to combat symbiotes. While he typically only carries standardized webbing he has been known to alter the chemical composition when necessary to include other properties such as "Taser Webbing" (that channels a biio-electric current) "Fire Webbing" (highly incendiary and useful against symbiotes), a motion activated "web grenade" as well as others should his resources and the situation demand it.
Abilities:
Genius Intellect: Peter is incredibly smart understanding many different scientific fields and capable of learning about those he doesn’t in short order. It has been said that Peter could potentially be smarter than both Tony Stark and Reed Richards, if he was ever able to actually focus on and apply his talents. Thus far, his smarts have been showcased not only in the unique ways he’s tackled complex problems, but also through the occasional costume upgrade such as an insolated suit used against Electro and a silver colored armor based off the same compounds that comprise his webbing. Other examples include his spider-tracers, tracking devices that are attuned to his spider-sense and the times he has spent as a research assistant or teacher.
Hand-to-Hand Combat Expert: Spider-Man has over the years been trained by the likes of Wolverine and Captain America. While he is far from being their equal, his powers make up for it in most regards. Once, while his spider-sense no longer worked, he trained with legendary martial artist Shang-Chi to develop a fighting style referred to as “The Way of the Spider” a form of hand-to-hand fighting that takes advantage of his movements and enhanced physique.
Photography: although he initially pursued it as a means of making money (off his own appearances as Spider-Man) Peter has actually become quite skilled at snapping pictures of good quality..
Weapons/Equipment:
Web-Shooters: wrist mounted devices of his own creation they hold the capsules of web fluid he has developed and “spin” the threads out. The trigger is pressure sensitive, attuned to his enhanced strength, and the force, width, and length of the “spray” can be adjusted as needed. They fire the webbing when Peter presses down with his middle and ring fingers creating the famous “Spider-Man” hand gesture. He has recently incorporated his cell phone into the shooters for hands-free communication while in costume. He is working on, but has yet to include a type of toned down "seismic blast" based off of technology used by long-time foe Shocker, in hopes of one day having a stunning maneuver to use on hardier opponents.
Web Cartridges: containers for the web fluid. Spidey tends to carry extra since fighting crime and spinning webs across town can cause him to run out when he needs it most. Some cartridges are modified to carry specific types of webbing.
Spider-Tracers: spider-shaped tracking devices that are attuned to his Spider-Sense. His trip through the Web of Life left them upgraded and wired for sound.
The Spider Signal: originally a light that emits in the shape of Spidey’s mask, it had been used merely for announcing his arrival and scaring criminals at night. It has been upgraded to act as a light source in dark places and with a UV function should forensic investigation be needed.
Utility Belt: a simple belt that fits beneath his costume. It is used for carrying his web cartridges, the signal, and tracers.
Camera: Peter managed to come through to New Earth with his high-end camera, the one he used to take photos for the Bugle.
History:
Peter Parker was raised by his Aunt May and Uncle Ben following the death of his parents. Raised a courteous, respectful young man Peter was a geeky teenager when he was bitten by a radioactive spider during a fieldtrip where he witnessed an experiment. The bite granted him the powers of a spider and Parker used his powers to enter a wrestling event in attempt to earn some much needed money. Cheated by the man running the promotion Peter allowed a thief that had stolen the winnings to escape only for that very thief to shoot his Uncle Ben as he stole his car. One moment of selfishness forever changed Peter’s life and drove home the wise words of Uncle Ben who taught him that “With Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility.” From that moment on Peter used his unique gifts to apprehend criminals and stop tragedies like the one he endured, becoming the Amazing Spider-Man.
In the years since that infamous night, Spider-Man has clashed with superhuman psychopaths and mundane crooks alike. He has saved the city and even the world on multiple occasions, joined the Avengers, and even gone on galaxy hopping adventures all while precariously trying to balance his social life. He seemed to have finally found that balance when he married Mary Jane Watson and moved on to teaching as a career. Though the journey has been wrought with trouble both superhuman and mundane, Peter has grown to become a staple of the superhero community meeting and teaming-up with the likes of the Avengers, the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, and even Deadpool on multiple occasions.
No longer the novice hero, Peter has grown into a respected (by his peers if not the press) hero who has managed both a personal life and a heroic identity all while being dogged by bad luck. Having earned the respect of his fellow heroes, he even joined the Avengers for a time, grateful to have allies he could count on after a career of being a solo operator. As usual, the good times did not last long. Initially siding with Tony Stark during the Civil War only to realize the error of his choice and join the Anti-Registration faction led by Captain America. In the fallout that followed, Parker went on the run with his wife and aunt, now the target of Pro-Registration heroes and villains who now knew his secret identity. Caught in the crosshairs of an assassin, May Parker was critically shot and Peter, donning his black costume for the first time in years, nearly crossed a line he swore he never would.
With May's life in the balance the Hell-Lord Mephisto appeared to the Parkers, offering them a deal to save the elderly May. Peter, ever the overthinking things, never had a chance to answer as Mary Jane spoke for him, striking a deal with Mephisto that would heal May and restore Peter's secret, all in exchange for trading their marriage and all memories of it. As Peter began to protest he found himself flung through a dimensional breach, Mephisto cackling all the while Spider-Man's memories of his life as a married man were erased and overwritten.
Dazed and injured, Spider-Man woke to the shouts of an Anti Neo-Human mob and attacking Neo-Human Containment forces. True to his title as the Lord of Lies, Mephisto upheld the deal...technically. After all nobody on New Earth knows who Spider-Man is so his identity is once again secret. Alone on New Earth he is making new allies and struggling to get by...
Weaknesses:
The Parker Luck: Spidey suffers from what he has dubbed “The Parker Luck”, but really it is an apparent lack thereof. From encountering villains (many that are out of his league) and falling into life threatening situations on a regular basis to worrying about rent and making it into work on time he can’t catch a break. Any happiness he finds lasts for about a millisecond before his life is shattered apart once more. More accurately if something can go wrong for him as Peter Parker or as Spider-Man it will.
Ethyl Chloride: Perhaps because of the nature of his powers or maybe just because it is typical Parker Luck, the chemical most often used in spider poison can make Peter very ill.
Spider-Sense Negation: Whether it is a type of magic, something merely not registering as a threat, a drug induced disruption, or the Venom symbiote and its offspring if something can bypass his Spider-Sense Peter is left more vulnerable due to relying upon it for so long.
With Great Power... Comes Great Guilt: Peter has a tendency to feel guilty over things even if they are not his fault. From not saving his Uncle Ben, to the death of Gwen Stacy, to not being there to save people he didn’t even know existed Peter carries a great burden with him. This can at times lead to moments of indecision when quick action is a necessity. Tied to this is the fact that Peter is deathly afraid of losing his family, friends, and loved ones. Having failed his Uncle Ben he fears not being able to save those he cares about most and is scared that he is not good enough, that he is not the hero he thinks he is, or the good man he wants to be.
Other Information:
For the most part this is the baseline 616 Spider-Man with a few aspects taken from my favorite eras/incarnations of the webhead. His primary costume is based off of the suit from Sam Raimi's movies (raised silver weblines), with moving lenses from the MCU/Superior Spider-Man version. I despise One More Day, but have incorporated my own version of it that allows Spidey to remain in character and not make deals with the devil. Furthermore his enhanced Spider-Sense is courtesy of the events of "The Other" in which he learned he is a Spider Totem and connected to the Web of Life. I am also allowing Spidey to remember crossovers that are not necessarily canon, so he'll have remembered working with Bats, the JLA/Avengers Crossover, etc. as is useful for story.
