WOLVERINE
Real Name: James Howlett
Alias: Logan, Wolverine
Identity: Secret
Age: 120+ years old
Species: Mutant, Vagrant
Physical Appearance: Short, heavily muscled, and ridiculously hairy. Those can all be used to describe the man known as Wolverine. He has a rather distinctive hair style, often shown with "wings" and an extremely old school style of sideburns that has expanded to his chin, and have reached lengths that almost go down to his chest. There have been many variations to this recipe, as some have Wolverine be completely clean shaven with short hair. Wolverine only stands approximately five feet, three inches tall, weighs in at about 300 pounds, because of the indesctructible Adamantium bonded to his bones, black hair, blue eyes, and, for some reason, extended canines. The image that I have provided, to me is the quintessential Wolverine.
He has worn several different outifts, but they've all had the same kind of general appearance. Really the biggest changes have been the color scheme. Blue and yellow, black and white, gold and brown. I'd add images, but that'd make things a bit ridiculous. In his off time, Wolverine likes to keep things simple. A white tank top with blue jeans and black boots, dog tags that he recieved when he was serving in the military, and a brown stetson that he got when he beat his oldest enemy in a bar brawl. Sometimes, he'll add a button up, usually in the often considered "lumberjack" style, or a brown leather jacket with yellow bands on the sleeves.
Personality: The marvel wikis love to describe Wolverine as a "gruff longer", but that isn't quite accurate. Wolverine is a loner, he does often work by himself, but Wolverine has been a member of several different teams within the Marvel universe. The Avengers, X-Force, X-Men, just to name a few. He's also been depicted to team up with other heroes that weren't working with a team at that time; Spider-Man, Daredevil, Captain America, Deadpool and Black Widow just to give a taste. Overall though, Logan is a complicated man when you try to break him down. He has a lot of pride, sense of honor, and is rather charasmatic. He's been shown to be very witty, often delivering a perfectly timed one-liner in the heat of the moment.
But, Wolverine is also a very angry man, who isn't known to be tactful or cautious. He doesn't make apologies and he doesn't believe in mercy. He's been quoted a few times saying, "My job ain't to show mercy, my job is to make them meet the being that does." He isn't religious, but he does believe in God, and has been shown, during WWI and WWII praying for the cause and for those he cares about. Wolverine, as a whole, is either the greatest ally you can imagine, or your worst nightmare come to life.
Powers:
Regenerative Healing Factor: Wolverine's primary mutant power is an accelerated healing process that enables him to regenerate damaged or destroyed tissue with far greater efficiency than an ordinary human. He can regenerate greatly damaged or destroyed tissue within a few seconds. However the full extent and speed of Wolverine's healing factor isn't truly known. He has been shown to fully heal from numerous gunshot wounds, severe burns covering most of his body, and regenerate missing eyes within a matter of seconds. Among the more extreme depictions of his accelerated healing factor involves him having his skin, muscles, and internal organs incinerated from his skeleton only to fully regenerate the tissue within minutes. Adamantium plays a crucial role in the speed of Wolverine's healing as well because of the fact that it produces a poison that his immune system fights off regularly. It is said that without the adamantium, his healing rate increases. This power even amends psychological wounds inflicted as a result of traumatic experiences. However, Wolverine's healing powers force his mind to suppress the memories, sometimes resulting in amnesia. He has referred to this as his mental scar tissue. Wolverine's healing factor has cured him from the mystical curse of the Werewolf after he had been bitten and turned into a werewolf and from vampirism, though it should be noted that the time it took to cure the Werewolf curse was longer than the time it took to cure him from vampirism. Because of his Healing Factor, many of Wolverine's other physical attributes have been enhanced:
- Foreign Chemical Immunity: Wolverine's natural healing also affords him the virtual immunity to poisons and most drugs, except in massive doses. For example, S.H.I.E.L.D. once managed to keep Wolverine anesthetized by constantly pumping 80 milliliters of anesthetic a minute into his system.
- Immunity To Disease: Wolverine's highly efficient immune system renders him immune against all known Earthly diseases and infections.
- Delayed Aging: In addition, Wolverine's healing factor provides him with an extended lifespan by slowing the effects of the aging process. Wolverine was born sometime during the late 19th Century. Although well over 100 years of age, Wolverine retains the health, appearance and physical vitality of a man in the physical prime of his life
- Superhumanly Acute Senses: Wolverine possesses superhumanly acute senses that are comparable to those of certain animals. He can see at far greater distances, with perfect clarity, than an ordinary human. He retains this same level of clarity even in near total darkness. His hearing is enhanced in a similar manner, allowing him to detect sounds ordinary humans couldn't hear at a greater distances, enough to hear a teardrop in another room that have thick walls with enough focus. He is able to recognize people and objects by scent, even if they are well hidden. He can track a target by scent, even if the scent has been greatly eroded by time and weather factors, with an extraordinary degree of success. Wolverine can also use his keen sense of smell to detect lies due to chemical changes within a person's scent. These senses stem from, at least partially, his constant cellular regeneration, as are his enhanced physical capabilities.
- Superhuman Strength: Wolverine's mutant healing factor enables him to push his muscles beyond the natural limits of the human body without injury, granting him some degree of superhuman strength. His natural strength is augmented by the demand placed on his musculature due to the presence of over 100 pounds of Adamantium bonded to his skeleton, which also removes the natural limitations of the human skeletal structure by allowing him to lift weights that would damage a human skeleton. Wolverine has been depicted with sufficient strength to break steel chains, support the weight of a dozen men with one arm and lift the 955 lb Ursa Major over his head before tossing him across a room. Wolverine's strength is enough to allow him to press somewhere in excess of 800 lbs but no more than 2 tons.
- Superhuman Stamina: Wolverine's mutant healing factor grants him high immunity against lactic acid and other fatigue toxins generated by his muscles during physical activity. Wolverine can sustain himself at peak capacity for several days. Wolverine has shown himself capable of fighting Arkady Rossovich (Omega Red) for over 24 hours, despite regular exposure to Omega Red's death spores. His lung capacity is at peak human level enabling him to hold his breath for 6 minutes under water, making his lungs as healthy as human's lungs can get.
- Superhuman Speed: Wolverine is able to move at low level superhuman speeds. He has attacked faster than the eye could follow and even Spider-Man briefly thought Wolverine was faster than he was in their first fight. His combat speed seems to have been more enhanced than anything else, as he has frequently kept up with Spider-Man in combat, and blitzed people before they pull the trigger of the weapon they were using.
- Superhuman Agility: Wolverine's agility, balance and bodily coordination are enhanced to levels far beyond the natural physical limits and capabilities of the finest human specimen. Wolverine's agility is sufficient to allow him to dodge multiple bullets (at point blank even). Other times, able to jump extremely high and evade several yards.
- Superhuman Reflexes: Wolverine's reflexes are similarly enhanced, they are also superior to those possessed by the finest human specimen and are equal to the likes of Steve Rogers' (Captain America) due to his superhumanly acute senses, although most of the time he relies highly on his regenerative healing factor.
- Superhuman Durability: Wolverine possesses superhuman durability. This is mostly because of his adamantium skeleton, which redistributed the force of blows dealt against. He has taken blows from Spider-Man on multiple occasions showing less than minimal discomfort, as well from a host of other much stronger characters such as Wonder-Man, Thor, Hulk, Thing, Skaar, Sebastian Shaw, and Kid Gladiator, who also had the advantage of spiked knuckles. However, even without his adamantium skeleton, Wolverine has displayed a degree of superhuman durability. For example, he was hit by a jeep, and was unharmed.
- Psionic Resistance: Due to a combination of his healing factor and psi-shields implanted by Professor Charles Xavier, Wolverine's mind was highly resistant to telepathic assault and probing
Bone Claws: Wolverine's skeleton includes six retractable 12-inch long bone claws, three in each arm, that are housed beneath the skin and muscle of his forearms. Wolverine can, at will, release these slightly curved claws through his skin beneath the knuckles on each hand. The skin between the knuckles tears and bleeds, but the blood loss is quickly halted by his healing factor. Wolverine can unsheathe any number of his claws at once, although he must keep his wrists straight at the moment his claws pass from his forearms into his hands. When unsheathed, the claws are entirely within his hands, allowing him to bend his wrists when they are extended. The claws are made of bone, unlike the claws of normal mammals which are made of keratin, and were originally believed to be bionic adamantium implants. Like his son Daken, the bone claws are sharp and dense enough to slice through substances as durable as most metals, wood, and stone.
Animal Empathy: Wolverine had the ability to sense the emotional state of animals on a basic level such as fear, anger, happiness or pain. He could even communicate with them to make the animal aware of his actions and or his intent.
Abilities:
Master Tactician: Though seemingly brutish, Wolverine is highly intelligent. When Forge monitored Wolverine's vitals during a Danger Room training session, he reported Logan's physical and mental state as "equivalent to an Olympic-level gymnast performing a Gold-medal-winning routine whilst simultaneously beating four chess computers in his head", which gives something of an idea of the level of sophistication and tactical processing Logan is capable of utilizing while in combat. He remembers Ogun teaching him Sun Tzu's The Art of War.
Master Martial Artist: Due to his extensive training as a soldier, a CIA operative, a samurai and a member of the X-Men, Logan is an exceptional martial artist, with expertise in Japanese martial arts, and has mastered almost every form of martial arts, Krav Maga, Judo, and Karate. His extraordinary hand-to-hand combat ability made him one of the deadliest combatants on Earth, as he was able to keep up with both the Black Panther and the Iron Fist, as well as defeat Captain America, Spider-Man, and many others.
Expert Marksman: He is an expert marksman skilled in throwing weapons and firearms, but operates more efficiently without them. In the Weapon X comic he said: "I can put six shots into a quarter... an' get change for the gum-machine."
Expert Swordsman: Logan is proficient in Japanese sword fighting having studied under Ogun and later in life under the Silver Samurai.
Skilled Acrobat: He is skilled in gymnastics, acrobatics and aerials, but is not on the same scale as others fighters like Captain America and Daredevil.
Advanced Covert Ops Expert: Due to his experience traveling the world and working for various government agencies, Wolverine is also a trained expert in multiple types of weapons, vehicles, computer systems, explosives, and assassination techniques.
Skilled Mechanic: Wolverine has been the mechanic of the X-Men's Blackbird, many of the vehicles that the X-Men use, and helped out several of the other creative minds in the Marvel universe.
Multi-lingual: A polyglot; Wolverine is fluent in many languages including English, Arabic, Japanese, Russian, Chinese, Cheyenne, Lakota, and Spanish; he has some knowledge of French, German, Thai, Vietnamese, and Portuguese. Ogun, his one time master, taught him Japanese ideograms.
Cultural Knowledge: With his increased lifespan and journeys across the globe, he has been able to amass an intimate knowledge of many foreign customs and cultures. Once he saw a kabuki play of The 47 Ronin and remarked how it was one of the finest kabuki troupes he had seen. His exploits have further endowed him with vast awareness of literature and philosophy.
Weapons/Equipment:
Adamantium Laced Skeleton: Not part of Wolverine's natural mutant attributes, Wolverine's entire skeleton, including his bone claws, were laced with the rare, artificial, and virtually indestructible alloy known as adamantium. As a result, Wolverine's bones are virtually unbreakable. The presence of the adamantium has further enhanced the already razor-sharp edge of Wolverine's bone claws. Aside from being practically indestructible, the claws are capable of cutting any solid material, with the known exceptions of true adamantium and proto-adamantium (Captain America's Shield). However, Wolverine's ability to slice completely through a substance depended upon the thickness of the substance and the amount of force he could exert. The adamantium also weighted his blows, dramatically increasing the effectiveness of his punches and kicks.
Adamantium Beta: The only known occurrence of adamantium beta was during the Weapon X Project. By the second part of the procedure, when they laced his bones with adamantium, there was a reaction with his healing factor that bonded metal and bone. As a result the adamantium "heals" just as his bones did
He's also been seen using a plethora of bladed weapons like katanas, daggers, his claws (obviously), different kinds of firearms (even though he prefers to use blades or nothing at all.)
For transportation he's been seen using Professor X's Rolls Royce, a 1964 Ford Mustang that was given as a gift from Domino, and various motorcycles in his long run of hero'ing.
History:
In The Beginning...
The boy that would ultimately grow-up to become the Deadliest Mutant in the World, started life as a frail and sickly child. Born somewhere between 1882 and 1885, he was the illegitimate love child between Elisabeth Howlett, who's husband was a wealthy estate owner named John Howlett, and the estate's grounds-keeper named Thomas Logan. The formative years of his childhood was spent being neglected by his mother, who was institutionalized for a while following the death of his older brother John Jr., and being abused at the hands of his Grandfather who's belief was "firm but fair" as a means to explain it. James spent the majority of his life spent on his father's estate, playing with his friends Rose O'Hara and Dog Logan. But, Thomas proved to be as abusive as Jame's grandfather, causing Dog's mentality to warp. Once the trio hit adolescence, Dog tried to force himself onto Rose, which James reported to his "father" John.
This caused Dog and Thomas to get kicked off of the estate and told to never return. However, Thomas, in a drunken stupor and armed with a shotgun, broke in and decided that Elisabeth was going to come with them. John tried to take the shotgun, but only got shot in the head. James, witnessing the murder, had his power manifest for the first time. The claws that he would ultimately be known for, ripped from the back of his hands and he attacked Thomas, gutting the man and clawing Dog's face in the process. With his dying breath, Thomas revealed that he, not John, was actually his father. Elisabeth, watching all this, lost all sense of reality and banishing James, Rose, and everyone else. As they were leaving, Elisabeth picked up the shotgun and ended her life.
After everything that had happened, James ended up on the run because of Mr. Howlett (James's grandfather) banishing them, and Dog lying to the authorities about everything that happened, pinning the blame on Rose. James, because of his healing ability, was left partially amnesiac, forgetting everything that had happened. Rose, being solely responsible for the pair, got them refuge at a mine in the Yukon territories, and started to call him "Logan." Over the years Logan had earned the respect and adoration of everyone within the Mining Community. Many going so far as calling him "Little Smitty" in reference to how his work ethic was similar to the mines foreman, Smitty. Smitty became a father figure for Logan, teaching the boy much and showing all sorts of wonders from around the world. As they were growing closer, so too were Smitty and Rose. Their closeness caused the two to eventually fall in love, which surprised and hurt Logan, because he had feelings for Rose, but never could show it because of their guise as "cousins."
The night that Rose and Smitty were supposed to leave, Dog ended up rolling into town. Dog, before confronting his brother, reminded him of his life as "James" and revealed that he was hired by James' grandfather to find them and bring them back. The two battled in the middle of the street, and even though Dog was bigger than James, he lost the fight. Rendered unconcious, James unsheathed his claws, to the shock and fear of everyone watching. Just as he was about to deal the deathblow, Rose leaped in to prevent it, causing James to stab Rose through the heart. Horrified at what he had done, Logan exiled himself, to live amongst the wolves that were running through the wilds of Yukon. And it was within the wilds that Logan stayed, but for however long nobody knows.
World War I and the Angel of Death
As the war to end all wars began, Logan ended up joining the Canadian army, as part of the Devil's Brigade. A highly specialized unit that was commanded by a mutant named Silas Burr, who had superhuman strength and a sinister heart. While fighting in Ypres, Belgium, on April 22, 1915, Logan encountered a being, called Lazaer (an anagram of Azrael, the Angel of Death), who was armed with a large broadsword and had been using it to kill soldiers that dared to challenge him. Logan engaged Lazaer, with the Angel of Death initially gaining the upper hand and stabbing Logan through the chest. However Logan pulled it out of his chest, much to the surprise of Lazaer, and used the sword to kill him. Defeating Lazaer seng Logan into a deep depression that ended with Logan putting a gun to his head.
The depression had gotten so bad that Logan didn't eat, drink, and barely slept. It was, after a time, revealed to him that the depression and suicidal thoughts were the aftermath of beating Azrael. It was a punishment for defiling the natural order of everything, and it was revealed that whenever Logan was "killed he'd be sent to an astral arena, where he'd have to beat Lazaer all over again if he wanted to go back to his body. After all this, Logan was sent back to Canada, where he again disappeared from public view until World War II happened.
World War II, Captain America, and Nagasaki
In 1939 Logan again surfaces and again his appearance was with the Devil's Brigade, which was still under Burr's command. Not much is known of his activities in 1939, but it is known that in 1941 Logan was sent to work with an American super-soldier codenamed Captain America, where they were tasked with neutralizing several nazi bases. Through their fighting together, the two had become close, which caused Captain America's partner, a young man named Bucky Barnes, to be wary Logan. Later in the same year, Logan again teamed with Captaim America and Bucky, this time in Tunisia, where they ended up meeting a man named Sergeant Nick Fury.
In 1942 Logan again resurfaces as "Lucky Jim" a paratrooper assigned to the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, where he helped in the D-Day landings of Normandy and the liberation of the Netherlands. In 1945 Logan was taken as a Japanese prisoner and sent to a prison camp at Nagasaki. Logan managed to escape from the camp with another soldier, named Ethan Warren. The two managed to find refuge and Logan ended up falling in love with a Japanese girl, however, this enraged Ethan, who unknown to Logan, was also a mutant. Ethan killed the girl, and the two ended up fighting, right up to the point where the bombs were dropped, ending World War II. Logan survived, but was devastated at the lose of another woman he loved.
Itsu, Department K, Weapon X and the X-Men
After the war had ended, Logan was looking for redemption and peace. Sick of his warrior life style, he ended up studying under a man named Bando Saburo. During his studies, learning how to be a man, he ended up meeting a woman named Itsu Akihiro who he fell in love with. In 1946, Logan and Itsu ended up conceiving a child, but fate ultimately destroyed the family. While Logan was away studying, an explosion happened, and through an unclear series of events, Logan ended up stabbing someone with his claws which caused him to be banished. Wanting to say goodbye to his wife, he came home to find her dead. Believing it to be because of the demon sword-smith Muramasa, he went off in a rage and ended up getting caught, tortured, brainedwashed and eventually trained by Muramasa himself.
It's unclear what happened to Logan, or how he escaped after this, but what is clear is he makes a reappearance in the 60s, this time also calling himself The Wolverine and working for a joint U.S.-Canadian secret group called Weapon X. The group also featured his worst enemy, named Victor Creed, Sabretooth. The problem with the group was that all the members of the X-Team, Wolverine, Sabretooth, and the rest, all had their memories messed with. Via technology, false scenarios, and telepathic manipulation. At some point, due to being shot with a special kind of round, Wolverine regaind all his memories, and tried to hide the fact, but Sabretooth knew. This caused a problem during one mission where V.I.P. that they were supposed to bring back to base, was killed by Sabretooth. Disgusted with this behavior Logan went to leave the team. But as he was fleeing, Department K, a group that had ties to Weapon X, ended up drugging and experimenting on Logan.
Department K had three scientists who decided to that they would bond an indestructible alloy called Adamantium, to Wolverine's bones. But that wasn't where it ended, they brainwashed Logan, causing him to become a mindless killing machine, codenamed Weapon X. After several years they found that Wolverine was proving to be far to difficult to control, eventually breaking free from the brainwashing and killing everyone within the secret facility except for three people. One of whom would become a high ranking governement official. Once he was free from Department K/X-Team/Weapon X, he ending up spending years living as a feral animal in the Canadian rockies. Eventually, in the 70s, Logan was found by two members of a team called Alpha Flight. Canadian heroes who worked for Department H, a group that operated for the Canadian government. Wolverine proved himself to be a capable and valuable teammember, even going so far as to be made a leader for Alpha Flight.
Not to long after, Logan had attracted the attention of a man called Professor Charles Xavier. The Professor, a mutant and powerful telepath, had a team that had been captured and he needed Logan's ability. Logan gave his resignation from Department K and Alpha Flight, and the rest, as they say, is history. Logan had battled alongside the greatest heroes that the universe had to offer. Captain America, Iron Man, Nick Fury, Spider-Man, the entirety of the X-Men and Avengers and just about everyone in between. Through the Professor's help and experience, Logan managed to regain all his memories, break any and all lingering effects of the brainwashing, and understand what it means to be a human/man.
A Brand New Earth
Wolverine had been tracking down leads. He had heard the rumors that a sorceror with evil intent was casting spells throughout the city, and he decided that was going to stop this behavior. It had taken several hours, but Wolverine had managed to track him down. Getting the face-to-face with the man, Logan had given his warning when something absolutely incredible, and rather horrifying, had happened. A hole had appeared in front of the sorceror, a millions flahing lights came rushing at Logan and he felt a vacuum sucking him in. Debris of all kinds went flying by his head as he felt his feet start sliding across the floor. Popping his claws, Wolverine dropped backwards and tried to use his claws as a means of crawling away but with every passing second the suction seemed to become more powerful.
Wolverine lifted his arm and that was all it took. The force of the vacuum had sucked in his arm with such force that he was completely absorbed into the portal. As he was sucked in, all his senses became jacked up. He couldn't tell which was he was facing, up seemed down, down seemed left. He felt his body spiraling. The spiraling became so intense that Logan felt like he was going to either vomit, or pass out. Just as he was reaching his limit, when everything started to fade into nothingness, a sharp and intense pain hit him square in his chest. Disoriented, Logan focused on his breathing and trying to find his center before opening his eyes. Finally, once he did a loud horn happened.
To his shock, and surprise, Logan was in the middle of a street. As near as he could tell, the thing that had hit him was the front bumper of a jeep. Where was he?
Weaknesses:
Muramasa Blade: Wolverine's only specific vulnerability known to date. Created by having his soul infused into a katana, the efficiency of his mutant healing factor is decreased dramatically if he sustains injury from the Muramasa Blade. Wolverine has been wounded once with the blade and, though the injury was very minor, it did not heal completely for 2 days.
Carbonadium Digestion: Wolverine's healing factor is also affected, though to a far less degree, if he ingests Carbonadium.
Heightened Senses: Wolverine's only other "weakness" is the fact that his heightened senses can be taken advantage of. For instance, when he was fighting The Hulk, he was nearly killed by the Hulk's thunder claps due to his heightened sense of hearing
Decapitation/Severe Spinal Damage: Professor X once stated that Wolverine could be killed if his head becomes separated from his body, causing his brain the inability to send signals to the section(s) of his body that needs healing. But because of the addition of his adamantium-laced skeleton, the idea seems very unlikely.
Adamantium Poisoning: Adamantium has proven to secrete poison which stunts Wolverine's healing factor and feral rage by a very small degree. Even though he has it laced throughout his entire body it has not made a significant change in his abilities. However, the poisoning will endanger Wolverine's life if his healing factor fails on him, such as when an inhibitor field cancels out his mutant powers
- Adamantium Allotropes: Adamantium has thirteen different allotropes (variants) that are very unstable compared to adamantium because of their different molecular configurations and thus physical properties. Some have caused Wolverine to become dizzy or weak just by being in close contact with these adamantium specimens.
Drowning: Of the few ways to kill Wolverine, given drowning cuts the brain's oxygen supply. He has admitted that being kept underwater can kill him, with the healing factor only prolonging the agony. Wolverine added that he is not fond of being on water, as the the addition of nearly 100 pounds of adamantium to his body reduced his buoyancy
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: It's believed by many that Wolverine actually suffers from PTSD. Difficulty in falling or staying asleep
horrific nightmares/reliving the traumatic experiences, irritability or outbursts of anger and hyper-vigilance. Those are all things that Wolverine suffers from and will be seen added through the stories. It should also be noticed that PTSD is also linked to "Combat fatigue" and "Shell-Shock."
Other Information: This particular Wolverine will be a culmination of several different versions. The X-Men Animated series, the mainstream (616) version, and a little bit of the MCU thrown in for kicks and giggles. I used the marvel.wikia.com/wiki/James_Howlett_(Earth-616) for much of the information (pretty much the entire power section) I used in this application, and all images located herein have been provided by google images. It should also be noted, that currently this Wolverine is dead.
