Real name: Jervis Tetch
Alias: The Mad Hatter
Identity: public
Age: 30
Species: human
Physical appearance:
Jervis has a relatively pale complexion and is often seen in his outfit which is based off the character of the Mad Hatter from Lewis Carrol’s ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.’ He is quite tall and wears an overly long green trench coat and suit pants with a green shirt and bow tie. On top of his head he has dark, curly hair and sports a top hat with a 10/6 card, which he uses as part of his weaponry to control the minds of his victims. Jervis is often seen with a large grin on his face as well as a distinctly large overbite. He also has a noticeable mustache and well-kept beard. His eyes tend to give off a cold stare and shows age well beyond his years.
Personality:
Tetch is known to be rather meek and comes off as a bit of a loner due to him having no friends while growing up. He tends to keep to himself whilst working on his experiments. Being a neuroscientist, Tetch has a rather odd obsession with the mind and how it works and won’t hesitate to use people as his lab rats to perfect his mind controlling technology. Tetch’s other obsession comes in the form of author Lewis Carrol and his work, even naming himself after the Mad Hatter from the Alice in Wonderland books. He tends to recite the book word for word and will often refer to others as characters from the book e.g. Batman is referred to as the ‘’Jabberwocky.’’ Despite the fact that Tetch hates Batman for foiling his plans, he will also attempt to get Batman to see his side of things as he has a child-like way of seeing the world.
Due to his deranged mind and obsession with Wonderland, Jervis comes across as very whimsical and believes the world around him is ‘’Wonderland’’ to the point where he will go out of his way to create scenes from the book and dress up people as the characters from the story. His Mad Hatter persona comes from the fact that he genuinely believes that he himself is the Mad Hatter from the Lewis Carrol tale and it therefore adds to his childish and timid nature. Because of how timid and childish he is, Tetch is also a hapless romantic and was seen to have was obsessed with an old co-worker of his named Alice. Tetch would always try to act like a gentleman around her, but it would come across as a way that was stalkerish and creepy, though he would never do anything to harm her physically. When his advances towards her were only seen as friendly on her side he ended up using his mind control devices on her to get her to like him, though he was very hesitant to do so.
Powers:
Even though he doesn’t have any powers, Jervis is a master in mechanical technology and neuroscience and is able to bend the minds of others to his very will through using his mind control chip technology. Considering the fact that Jervis comes across as a loner, he does have a bit of a silvertongue. He’s known to have some charisma and is very word savvy and has been known to sway people to think his way. An example of this is when he told a heart-warming story to convince a wealthy woman to invest in some dolls for his next scheme.
Abilities:
Jervis is a renowned scientist that studies anything to do with the mind and how it works. He uses his skills to develop mind controlling technology and has created many variations of the circuitry. The circuits in the chips he creates ‘’rewire’’ his victims into mindless drones. The drones tend to have an increase in strength and they lack a conscience.
Even though he is more renowned for his knowledge of the mind and manipulating it, Jervis is also known to have an aptitude for disguises, e.g disguising himself as a clown as part of a circus act. He uses these disguises at times to infiltrate places to hatch his master plan.
Weapons/Equipment:
When working as a neurotechnician at his old job, Jervis Tetch was experimenting with mind controlling technology and has created several versions of it. He uses chips situated inside hats or playing cards and has a chip inside his own hat that allows him to control his victims.
History:
Jervis Tetch grew up very much a loner with no friends due to his odd look. As an adult, Tetch became a neuroscientist and was experimenting with mind control equipment for the lab he worked at. Whilst there, he developed a romantic interest in his co-worker, Alice. He always tried to impress her and win over her affections and did so by dressing up as the Mad Hatter from Lewis Carrols ‘Alice’s Adventure’s in Wonderland.’ Alice took Jervis’s gestures towards her as a friendly attempt to cheer her up after she and her boyfriend broke up, but eventually they got back together. Despite feeling angered and betrayed that his beloved Alice got back together with her boyfriend and became engaged, Jervis continued to try and impress her by brainwashing people with his microchipped cards to have those people praise him and make him seem like he was the greatest man in the world.
Alice did not take kindly to what he was doing, so Jervis eventually kidnapped her and brainwashed her to think she was Alice from the novel. This eventually got the attention of Batman once word got out that Alice had been kidnapped. Jervis set up an area in an amusement park to make it out to be like a scene from the books and had several brainwashed people dress up as characters from the story as well. Tetch set a couple of his ‘’goons’’ upon Batman once the vigilante discovered his whereabouts, but they were easily defeated and Tetch was eventually sent to Arkham Asylum.
Over the years, Tetch, going solely by the Mad Hatter at this point, had developed machines that could put people into a dream-like state, which would force them to live in some sort of alternate reality. He has also been able to find ways to control people even as they slept using dolls with microchips but was eventually stopped by Batman. Hatter has had multiple encounters with Batman during his criminal career and, despite hating him, has continuously attempted to get Batman to see the world through his eyes.
Weaknesses:
Jervis may be an excellent scientist, but he lacks any fighting skills and so can be easily taken out in combat. He can also be influenced by his infatuation with Alice or anything Lewis Carroll. Breaking the main ‘’control’’ for his microchips (which resides in the hat he wears) frees his victims from the mind control. Someone else taking off the microchipped card from the victim’s head will also bring them back to reality. Jervis is also schizophrenic and has a paranoid fear of reality setting in when his mind isn’t in Wonderland.
