THE SANDMAN
Real Name: William Baker
Alias: Flint Marko, Sandman
Identity: Public
Age: Mid 30's
Species: Human (Mutated)
Physical Appearance:
Although William is a fledged polymorph and can take many different shapes and forms, while in his human guise he's indistinguishable from your everyday Caucasian man. Most recognizable is his strong chin, brutish features, and a bulky frame, and though his line of work often keeps him at odds with the law, he keeps his face clean-shaven, his hair groomed, and his teeth more or less cleaned. For clothes, he is a man of simple tastes, often preferring casual shirt and pants; although he has been convinced to wear a costume from time to time.
However, bear in mind that William is not human at all, but rather a being entirely made of sand. As a result, Sandman does not always reveal himself as William Baker the man, but rather as a monstrosity. He can take a multitude of forms, so long as he can imagine it and has the sand to do it. In actuality, Will has been revealed to be only one tiny grain of sand among many, and it's impossible to say what he would look like if he were still organically human.
Personality:
If ever there was a man stricken by bad luck, it would be William Baker. He is not a bad man, not really, but confused and conflicted. On the surface, you would be forgiven for thinking he was nothing but your average mugger. He has never presented himself as being kind or caring, and with his brutish way of talking, he hardly seems educated. He is, of course, prone to violent outbursts and hatred, and he is proud -- oh, so proud. He is driven by money and by greed, and is always very selfish and struggles to do anything that would not benefit him first of all.
But, he is not a bad man. If you knew what went on in his head, you would see he does not want to be the bad guy. No, though he is quick to anger, and prideful, and greedy, and would undoubtedly smash your face in if you but looked at him wrong; he is not evil. His passion is natural because he was bullied as a child and learned to be angry to beat the bullies. His pride he earned once he became the top dog in school, having won his agitators' respect. His greed is because his father left him and his mother when he was a young boy, and he had to learn to fight for whatever scraps of money he could.
If you want to know the truth, it's that a desire for love and respect drives will. When he did well in school, it's because he wanted the love of his teacher. When he fought his bullies, it's because he wanted their respect. When he stole from others, it was so he could provide for his mother; and earn her love at the same time. And when he became a criminal and robbed and stole and murdered? It was so he could obtain the respect of his father. It was so he could really, truly make something that would last in this world, and be remembered and respected for it.
So you see, Will isn't a bad man; he's not a good man, sure, and he has many, many issues. But he isn't evil, for all his faults. He's just a man who wants to be loved.
Powers:
Sand Body:
The Sandman is not flesh and blood. His body is completely made up of sand, that he can mentally control as he sees fit. In actuality, he is but one grain, called the Alpha Grain or Soul Molecule, from which all the other grains of sand are controlled. As a result of this mutation, William can change his form to any that he chooses, and manipulate his density to be as durable or flimsy as desired. This, effectively, splits his powers into two separate areas.
Physical Enhancement:
The Sandman can condense his grains of sand to become harder than sandstone. This enhances his physical abilities to superhuman levels.
-Superhuman Strength: The Sandman is capable of lifting upwards of 85 tons.
-Superhuman Durability: The Sandman is able to take blows most aren't, being able to take a forceful punch from other superhumanly strong opponents without batting an eye.
-Superhuman Stamina: The Sandman does not grow tired after extended use of his power, regardless of which form he takes. Or, if he does, it takes a very long time.
Physical Shifting:
Alternatively, the Sandman can also rapidly disperse and shift his molecular structure, allowing him to change forms at will.
-Shape Shifting: The Sandman can change his form to anything he chooses, as well as condensing himself in any form, thereby allowing him to do such acts as transforming his hands into literal weapons, crawling on the ground like a bundle of snakes, or collapse like a powerful wave of sand.
-Sand Blasts: The Sandman can shoot out his particles at tremendous speeds, sometimes as a dispersed 'shotgun' type effect, or sometimes as projectiles.
-Reformation: The Sandman is capable of regenerating from wounds, so long as he is not isolated from the sand required to do so. This can also be used to increase his mass, depending on how much is available, potentially transforming into a giant monstrosity.
-Wall-Crawling: The Sandman is capable of climbing vertical walls, by clinging to its surface with his grains of sand.
Immortality: In addition to the above mentioned, because he is made of sand, Sandman no longer ages. Additionally, he does not require food, water, rest, or even air in order to survive.
Abilities: William Baker does have some ability with science and mechanical engineering.
Weapons/Equipment: N/A
History:
Sand. There had been so much sand. He had become like a storm, his many grains swirling endlessly across the Sahara. How had he lost? He was stronger than he'd ever been, he felt as if he could crush the mightiest of heroes; then Spiderman arrived, and it was all over. Somehow, he knew - knew that for all his might and size there was but one grain at the center that controlled it all. Somehow, he knew just the right way to not only locate that one grain of millions but then isolate it and lock it away. He was powerless then, cursing in the dark void of whatever container that damnable insect put him in. It was pitch black and he couldn't hear anything, but there wasn't any sand there, he could tell you that.
He wasn't sure how long he'd been locked away, there was little to tell the time and he never got tired anyways. He'd almost gone mad when light blasted him as if he looked right at the sun. It took him a moment to realize that's exactly what the light was. But there was nothing else. He looked around and found that he was floating, alone, in the depths of outer space. There indeed was a tiny capsule that had melted apart as it drew near the massive red sun. William Baker screamed as he was pulled deeper into the star's gravity; he would not feel the heat, but he would feel himself slowly turn to glass, and then gem, and then he would fall unconscious and sleep for all eternity. He did not want that.
Will thought of Keemia, his daughter, and how he'd promised to look after her and take care of her, and be there for her always. He'd broken that, just as his father had for him. This would be the end of the Sandman, and to think he didn't even get to say goodbye. As he fell closer and closer to the sun, feeling the life be sapped from him by the minute, he realized then that there was something else. Blinding as the sun was, there was darkness within it, like a gaping void. And it was growing! It encompassed the star and then there was an explosion! And everything went dark.
When he awoke, William Baker was back on earth. By some miracle, he'd landed on a beach, and he was so small that undoubtedly nobody saw him. Indeed, they behaved as if nothing happened at all. It took him some time to discover that he was not in the same world at all and that the people and events here were very much different from where he was before. He decided he'd lay low for a while and wait to discover if anyone he knew was here too...
Weaknesses:
Water: Frankly, it terrifies him. Not only does water render him immobilized depending on the severity, he also has a literal fear of being near large bodies of water.
Heat: 3,4000 Fahrenheit or more transforms his sandy particles into glass. While he is capable of reforming himself, this does take time, and for a long while after he is rendered powerless.
Telepathic Interference: He is susceptible to telepathy, and a strong enough telepath can even forcefully cause him to lose control of every grain except for the Alpha Grain.
Loving Father: Keemia is his literal world, and she has been used many times in the past to manipulate him. Whether that be to perform villainous acts, or heroic ones.
Sand: He draws his power from the sand. While he always has his own personal sand with him, should he become separated from it in any way he becomes unable to regenerate himself.
