MOON KNIGHT
Real Name: Marc Spector
Alias: Moon Knight, Mr. Knight, Steven Grant, Jacob Lockley
Identity: Secret
Age: 37
Species: Human/Vagrant
Physical Appearance:
Standing at 6'2” with warm, olive-toned skin, scruffy perma-stubble, and Hollywood-style features in his build and face, Marc Spector is the epitome of the phrase “tall, dark, and handsome,” regardless of what headspace he is currently in. He has short, dark brown hair and brown eyes that pierce directly down to the pit of your soul, as if he can see every misdeed, every sin, every shred of guilt you hold with a mere glance.
As Moon Knight or Mr. Knight, he is decked head to toe in stark white, whether in his iconic cloak and skintight body armor or in a pressed, finely tailored suit. Like the glowing figure of the moon itself, Moon Knight wants to be seen by those he stalks in the night so they know divine punishment is about to be wrought upon them. He hides his face behind a cloth mask, also white in color, with no features or expression save for soulless-looking slits for eyes and the shape of a crescent moon over his forehead.
Personality:
As a vigilante with Dissociative Identity Disorder, Moon Knight has several separate and distinct identities, representing in their own way the four aspects of the Egyptian moon god, Khonshu. When Moon Knight acts, he follows the path of the Pathfinder, the Defender, the Embracer, and the Watcher of Overnight Travelers, depending on what persona and what identity is needed and advised by the moon god for the situation, though these aspects and personalities tend to bleed into one another, subtle at best, jarring at worst. There is a fifth, hidden aspect, known only as The One Who Lives On In Hearts, that is a mystery to even Marc himself, though perhaps his weak mind doesn't want to learn the truth of this persona's nature, and is shielding itself from further fracture.
As Moon Knight and Mr. Knight, he is an unnerving presence to be around and an even more terrifying one to be the target of. Both these aspects, as they seem to be the most alike and work the best in tandem with one another are stoic, ruthless, and highly tactical, with a strong sense of will, logic, and intelligence, though there is definitely something inherently off-kilter about them. Mr. Knight is the quiet, calm and cool detective, slipping into dark places and seedy underbellies in order to solve a case or mystery, be it supernatural or mundane in nature. Moon Knight, on the other hand, is the devout champion of the god Khonshu, the wrath of the moon god itself. Those that disrupt the balance of order wherever Moon Knight roams or look to harm those that he watches over that travel by way of moonlight are subject to the divine smiting from this vigilante.
His other personalities include Steven Grant, the playboy billionaire philanthropist and film star with a flair for the dramatic and a debonair attitude. He is charming, witty, and romantic in this headspace, with the money and social aptitude to get any information he so desires, as well as any young starlet he wants to warm his bed for the night. Jacob Lockley, on the otherhand, is the gruff and introverted cab driver with a strong sense of morality and street smarts. He understands the plight of the more run-down types that walk alone in any given city, and is known for offering a listening ear when needed, though he uses this information to his own ends, as well as the ends of the other personas.
At the base of all these personalities is Marc Spector, the supposed original mind buried under the rest of these personas all clamoring for control. Marc is a combination of all the aforementioned personalities – ruthless, intelligent, charming, and empathetic. However, he both revels in and resists his role as Khonshu's avatar and champion, often arguing the god's will with his own logic, though always finding himself failing in that regard due to the weakened state of his fractured psyche. He has the strange tendency to both see through lies and illusion while at the same time can be easily manipulated by it.
Powers:
Moon's Might - Moon Knight has been granted enhanced strength, speed, stamina, and endurance as a gift for his loyalty to the moon god, Khonshu, that wax and wane in power based on the phases of the moon. However, this might just be a case of mind over matter, as Marc truly believes he has been granted the strength of his patron deity, regardless of whether this is the truth or simply the ramblings of a madman.
Due to the fractured nature of his mind, Moon Knight is able to adapt to the personality that he needs at any given time, and has telepathic immunity to those who would try to possess or brainwash him. He has an almost inhuman resistance to pain and his presence is known to strike fear directly into the heart of those that meet him as Moon Knight. He may have a sixth sense towards the supernatural that allows him to see ghosts and monsters, but this, like most of his powers and abilities, is up for debate.
Abilities:
Military Training: Marc is a former commando and mercenary with intensive training in armed and unarmed combat, including boxing, judo, savate, and kung fu. He has extensive knowledge of pressure points and how they effect the human body, as well as of military secret police methods of torture for interrogation purposes, and is a master of most weaponry, both melee and projectile. Due to his former Marine training, Marc is also an expert pilot and aviator.
Egyptomaniac: Due to his travels and his connection to the moon god, Khonshu, Marc has amassed an extensive knowledge of Egyptian mythology and iconography. Much of his fortune has come from the sale of found artifacts from his adventures in old ruins, though he still decorates his home and altar with such treasures, and has found spiritual uses for them as Moon Knight.
Weapons/Equipment:
Crescent Darts - These thematic, curved throwing blades are Moon Knight's signature calling card and favorite weapon. Marc usually keeps a dozen of them in protective holster on his belt. He also has at his disposal two pistols capable of shooting crescent darts attached to specialized cables that allows him to grapple, trip and pin enemies to surfaces with a more precise shot.
Truncheon - Though this device can be used in close quarters as a blunt or thrown weapon, it also is capable of functioning as a grappling hook, club, or nunchaku. It separates into two shorter clubs linked by an internal chain to catch a weapon or limb, or to lengthen the club's arc of travel and thus its force. The hook springs forth from one end and, with a cable attached, allows Moon Knight to climb to, descend from, or swing around a fixed point.
Various Firearms and Explosives
Quarterstaff and Other Close-Range Martial Weaponry
Egyptian Artifacts - Moon Knight has amassed a large collection of Ancient Egyptian weapons and artifacts, gifted to him by Khonshu. Or perhaps he stole it all. It's usually one or the other. Supposedly mystical in nature, these relics are often employed against the more supernatural or occult threats he faces as the Watcher of Overnight Travelers, and includes ankhs, cesti, scarab darts, and various armors.
History:
Moon Knight's story is often ever changing, as even he's not exactly sure what the real story is anymore, but there are a few commonalities in all the tellings. Marc was born to immigrant Jewish parents that had escaped fascist regime in Europe in the 1930s, but growing up in America, he was much more interested in the materialistic than in the moralistic he was being taught. He rejected his rabbinical father's teachings, enlisted in and was then dishonorably discharged from the US military, and used his Marine training as a young adult to take up mercenary work and travel the world in search of his fortune. During his overseas travels, he met with his now long-time best friend, Jean-Paul DuChamp, whom he affectionately dubbed “Frenchie,” who still offers insight and knowledge to him, even after the events that allowed him to become the Fist of Khonshu.
One of his jobs to assist in overthrowing a corrupt dictatorship paired him up with Raoul Bushman, a bloodthirsty terrorist whose violent and barbaric methods shook even Marc's hardened heart, and made him start questioning his mercenary lifestyle. Bushman was the worst of what Marc could have become in time, being far more interested in money than in taking down totalitarian governments, and dragged Spector and Frenchie along for the ride on his latest score – a recently uncovered Egyptian tomb discovered by Dr. Peter Alraune. Such untouched ruins were sure to be filled with valuable treasure, and Bushman was intent on getting Dr. Alraune to spill where it was, or face grisly consequences. Alraune refused and attacked, looking to defend his discovery, only to have his throat ripped out with Bushman's steel teeth, right in front of Marc. It was right then and there that Marc made his decision to get out of the game, and helped Dr. Alraune's daughter, Marlene, escape from the maniac's clutches. Marlene was brought to safety, but Bushman caught Marc essentially getting in between him and his fortune by hiding away the only other who had knowledge of the lost tomb, and beat him bloody until he was unconscious.
When Marc came to, he had been abandoned in the hot African desert, left to die an agonizing death. He dragged himself broken and bleeding through the shifting sands, until he finally came upon the newly unearthed tomb discovered by Dr. Alraune, and collapsed at the foot of a statue of the moon god, Khonshu, dead.
Or at least, he was, until he stood back up again.
Revived with a new purpose of vengeance by Khonshu, Marc donned himself in the ceremonial cloaks found in the tomb and took on the name of Moon Knight, the devout warrior that carries out the will of the moon and protects those that travel by night. However, his human mind couldn't handle the split aspects Khonshu respresents, Pathfinder, Defender, Embracer, and Watcher of Overnight Travelers, causing his personality to crack and splinter into several distinct personality facets to accommodate.
Or...Marc Spector could just be a very sick man with a vivid imagination, perhaps too influenced by pulp fiction novels and tales of the weird, his instability not allowing him to understand the difference between fantasy and the real world. After a rather angry discussion with Khonshu, his mind flashed and cracked, and he woke up strapped down to a bed in what seemed to be a mental health institution. When he managed to get a doctor to explain what was going on, he was told he had a violent nervous breakdown and needed to be restrained until his medications balanced him out again. During this time, he learned that any of the current events he knew of, generally involving the Avengers or other heroes of his world, he was assured that these were merely delusions of his illness, and that the neo-human and vagrant attacks that had been plaguing the news as of late must have bled into his subconscious.
Khonshu, on the other hand, warns to not fall for such lies. He is still Moon Knight. He is still Khonshu's avatar. And his vengeance must now stretch across dimensions.
Weaknesses:
Slave to God's Will: Moon Knight was given his abilities and the gift of rebirth from the Egyptian moon god Khonshu, and the figment he often sees of this entity is quick to remind him that it can be just as easily taken away. Marc's every step is haunted by this god's will, and though he might argue or complain, he very rarely goes completely against him, even if logic and self-preservation dictates that he shouldn't.
Is Any Of This Real?: Marc has very little grip on reality, living out four or more lifetimes at once, but he's intelligent enough to realize that several aspects of his world don't exactly make sense. The thought that his entire life and motivation for living it is merely another aspect of his mental illness is terrifying and will likely cause him to shatter irreparably, though Khonshu often makes him brush aside these concerns as mere fancy, thoughts that the man's weak mind shouldn't bother to fathom. However, his doubt and delusion leaves him vulnerable to mental and emotional manipulation, especially when in a crisis of faith and of the self.
Violent Lone Wolf: Moon Knight's cold and violent methods of vigilante and divine justice is unnerving to most that work with him, even those that care for him and understand his affliction, so he generally works on his own. He's not exactly the easiest man to like or get along with.
Beyond Human Limitations: While Moon Knight bleeds and breaks like any other human, he believes Khonshu protects him and thus must be invincible. He just does not stop, and will continue forcing his body to continue beyond sane limits, further damaging his body and ignoring injury until he finally gives out.
