Name: Carrie Whittaker
Alias: Sketch
Identity: Secret. She gets anyone and everyone to call her Sketch. She hates her other name.
Age: 16
Species: Human/Neo-Human
Physical Appearance: Sketch’s physical appearance include olive skin, dark brown eyes and dark brown - almost black - hair that comes down to her shoulders in waves. Her olive skin is a result of her biological parents being from somewhere in Europe, though she’s uncertain where from. She’s about 5-foot-tall and skinny, which happened as a result of mistreatment and neglect in her earlier years. Her physical stature has come in rather handy for her, especially as a street kid as she’s able to slip in and out of places quietly and often unnoticed. Her small frame has people often mistaking her for an easy target, but they learn that she can pack a mean punch. Her taste in clothing is typical of the street kids look and usually includes ripped denim jeans, a long-sleeved black tee shirt, a ripped dull grey hoodie and a pair of black sketchers because of her name being similar to the brand name.
Because of her history, Sketch hardly smiles, and it makes her eyes look more sunken in and baggy like she hasn’t slept for a while, making her look more dishevelled. The only thing that brings any kind of joy to her is her art. She keeps all of her art supplies inside a backpack, except for her spray cans, which she carries in a makeshift belt around her waist.
Personality: Due to her history, Carrie is hot tempered and very brash and sarcastic. She doesn’t trust anyone and will avoid getting close to people because she has major abandonment issues. Because of her history and fear of abandonment, she also comes across as standoffish and aloof to anyone that tries to approach her and will not hesitate to tell anyone to go away to their face. Sketch feels that everyone will eventually leave her if she ends up getting close to them, so she feels she’s better off on her own and she will quickly push anyone new away by telling them to piss off almost immediately. She values bluntness and honesty, so the only way anyone can get through to her is by telling her face what she’s afraid of, even though she will still tell that person to piss off and mind their own business at first.
However, despite all the harshness and her standoff attitude, she expresses herself in her drawings by drawing herself with a family as a way to express that she does really want to feel a sense of belonging. When she’s not stealing or fending for herself to survive, Sketch spends her time graffitiing and creating amazing murals on the side of abandoned buildings. Sometimes she carries around a sketch book and draws random people or animals that she sees on the street.
Powers:
Artistic Animation: Due to her time as a lab rat, Sketch developed the ability to manifest and create weapons and inanimate objects through her artwork. She mainly uses spray paint, pencils and regular paint to create the objects, though she has used other artistic mediums and even sticks and dirt to create. Her main items for drawing/painting are on walls and the sketchbook she carries with her at all times in her pack. The objects only manifest when she pulls them out herself, otherwise they stay still drawings. Because she got her powers from her time as an experiment, the chemicals in her blood, which are powered by her natural body heat, allowing her to transmutate the drawings and paintings to reality, using her art materials and her focus to make the drawings happen. The weapons act like real weapons, except anything that needs ammunition like guns does not run out until the creation is rendered useless. Swords and other weapons can be used like their original counterparts. The way she draws an item also does not affect how it looks or acts when transmutated.
Sketch also has the ability to bring her drawings of humans and animals to life, though they are not intelligent and are mindless drones that she uses to follow her command. She hardly attempts to create humans and animals as they take more of her energy and drain her energy. She also doesn’t create them due to a sense of decency and moral compass. The only times she creates mindless animals and humans is when she’s stuck in dire situations and there’s no other way out. All of her creations last one hour when brought to life and she can only create a maximum of three at a time, but when it comes to the humans and animals she can only do one at a time. If she ever does summon a ‘’human’’ or ‘’animal’’ she does so only on walls or anywhere that’s large enough for her to do so.
Abilities:
Given her time being on the streets, Sketch has learned to think quick on her feet when she’s stuck in certain situations. An example of this was when she was hiding from a police officer after being caught stealing and she quickly drew up a cat to knock things over and make some noise, distracting the officer and allowing her to get away. Even though she’s not actually skilled in combat, she has also used the weapons and inanimate objects she brings to life in rather imaginative ways in an attempt to outsmart anyone in her way.
Due to her small frame, she also has the ability to get into and out of tight spots and can easily slip away when no one is looking. Sketch is also known to be an excellent artist and sometimes uses her artworks to sell them on the street once they are rendered useless to her.
Weapons/Equipment: Art supplies that she carries in a backpack. Her favourite ones to use are her spray cans for graffiti art and she carries them in a makeshift belt.
History: Sketch - real name Carrie Whittaker - lived in the Bronx NYC for the first 3 years of her life and was an only child to immigrant parents. Her family was poor and often in a lot of debt because they were gamblers and drug addicts. Because of this, Carrie was neglected and abused. When Carrie was 3, her parents died from a drug overdose and she was put into the foster care system because she had no other family to take her in. Her last name, Whittaker, came from her first foster family. Because of her abuse, Carrie developed behavioural problems from a young age and would often throw uncontrollable tantrums and fits of rage that eventually lead her to be given back to the foster care system by her first adopted family.
Her growing behavioural issues lead to potential families giving her back and abandoning her and she was continuously thrown around in foster care for years. Carrie finally settled with what seemed to be a lovely family that had two older children that were also adopted. Carrie eventually started to settle, and her behavioural issues began to subside, but eventually she started copping physical abuse from the parents. She tried to tell on the parents but was not believed due to her history of constant bad behaviour. To escape the constant abuse, she would often hide in her room and draw, eventually taking up the name of Sketch and calling herself that as a way to distance herself from her situation.
Because the abuse never stopped, Carrie took it upon herself to run away at the age of 7. It wasn’t long until trouble found her again and she joined street gangs that would go around vandalising property and causing trouble. Eventually she and the other kids in the gang were kidnapped by government agents and experimented on by Dr. Rhea Adler at Echo Labs for the Pygamalion Project, which then made her a neo-human. She and the other kids were kidnapped under the belief that their bodies and minds are still developing so they will be able to grow and adapt to whatever powers they were given through constant experimentation. Eventually, each child ended up dying except for her as she had already been through so much torture and abuse, therefore her mind and body was strong enough to fight off everything given to her. The first occurrence happened when a scientist who took pity on her and gave her a sketchbook to draw in. Carrie drew a small, rusty nail because it was one of the many objects she would see within the lab and brought it to reality when her hand slipped *inside* the drawing and pulled it out. With each new chemical given to her, her powers began to evolve, leading her to be referred to as Project Galatea.
Carrie spent 3 years inside the Echo Labs undergoing constant tests to see what she could do. The scientist that gave her the original sketchbook took pity on her and eventually helped her escape. Due to the constant trauma she endured, Carrie does not remember her time in the laboratory and whatever things she does remember only come to her in flashbacks or fragmented dreams and sometimes she draws what she remembers just to get a better understanding of that time of her life. She doesn’t even remember the name or face of the scientist that took pity on her and helped her eventually escape.
Weaknesses:
• Sketch’s powers are limited three creations at a time. She has been able to create more than three items at one time, but it drains her and makes her exhausted.
• Her creations are limited to an hour off the page and cannot be reused (eg if she draws a sword and uses it for an hour, she cannot use the same sword and has to create another one).
• Anything she creates are limited to size (eg she can only create things big or small enough to be handled by humans and nothing overly monstrous and in terms of animals, she can’t create anything bigger than a wolf).
• She can have emotional outbursts and fits of rage. This is due to her trauma and the fact that she never learned to have control of her emotions as a young child.
• She has a fear of abandonment because she had been thrown around from home to home and worries that if she gets close to anyone, they’re just going to leave.
• Water damage to her paintings, drawings or graffiti work can make the item disappear.
• If the wall or book she used gets damaged, it causes the manifested item to glitch and become fragmented and can make it disappear sooner. It also drains her mentally as she has to keep control of the object to stop it from disappearing.
• She cannot create WMD’s or chemical based weapons.
Group title: Artistic Survivor
OOC name: Jazz
Character colour: Purple
Additional information: Sketch kept herself hidden by mainly using her powers to create easily obtainable objects/weapons (e.g. ropes, chains etc...) and limited creating anything out of the ordinary. If no damage has come to her artwork, her summons disappears and become still images again. If the art is done on paper, she uses the still image to sell on the streets to try and make some money.
