Chicago. The Windy City. Filled with skyscrapers, and of course with all large cities, shopping malls.
One of the many shopping malls in the centre of the city was a hive of activity. Outlets lined the two levels and the five different white tiled roads were all connected by the central food court. Light was shining down from the glass dome above, toddlers were escaping from their parents the minute they were released from their prams, a baby was crying in their mother’s arms while she fumbled to get some food into her mouth while also trying to soothe them. It was busy, but of course it would be. There were sales on after all and they drew people from far and wide.
The chatter from the people at least drowned out the roadworks that were taking place not too far away, although the occasional rumble of a tarmac roller going past would echo through and be heard over everything else.
Artemis set down her food tray at one of the few free tables in the food court. Setting what shopping bags she had, along with her own, underneath the table, she shrugged off her jacket. She did a quick look around her before she planted herself on the seat, taking a handful of french fries from the bag in front of her and popping them into her mouth.
Her intention of getting Virgil out of the flat for even a few hours had been a success. Even if she had to almost drag him out with her. Hopefully he didn’t hate her too much for taking him away from his workbench….again.
That thought had her eating more french fries, popping them in her mouth before she pulled her hair back and tied it up with an elastic to keep it out of the way of her food. It had a mind of it’s own sometimes.
She was taking a drink of from the bottle of water in front of her when Virgil appeared, “so, after this we’ll head back?” she asked before he had a chance to start eating, “unless there’s anywhere else you want to go,” she added returning to eating more of her fries.
When he replied, she gave a nod and then her eyes looked around the food court again while she listened to the news reports that were being announced on the radio in the background. Artemis let out a small huff at this as she opened the burger wrapper, glancing over at Virgil for a second, her expression saying more than any of her words could before she tried to get rid of the slight glare in her eyes by taking a bite out of her burger. Neos and vagrants were a regular news update, especially in the newspapers she had been reading recently. Anyone with abilities, or had dropped out of the sky like they had were…. judging by the lists of missing persons….Kidnapped? Taken? Imprisoned never to return?
Her gaze settled to the food in front of her before she looked around again, a mother was calling out to her child to slow down and the kid zoomed past their table giggling as he held a bubble wand in the air. It wasn’t long before the kid was scooped up by his father who called out that he got him.
Artemis gave a small smile just as a bubble floated down and popped directly in front of her face, her eyes closing quickly before she opened them again starring completely deadpan for a second or two, “damn it, right in my face,” she grumbled shaking her head as she made a grab for a napkin.
