It was terrible--horrible, even. Mar'i had gotten separated from Damian and she had no glasses! The police had come after them from all the commotion, and an unfortunate gust of wind had blown off her hat at the worst possible moment. Mar'i might have gotten carried away flying from the scene, given she ended up quite far from Central Park. She knew where to find placed to hide, being the daughter of heroes and all. Everyone knew there was an abandoned warehouse somewhere in a big city, usually by the waterfront where other industrial buildings were. It was also a place bad guys tended to hide so normally she was told to stay clear but, this was not a normal situation.
She groaned as she buried her face behind her knees. She'd flown in through a broken window, which just became even more broken. Shattered glass fell inward where she had flown, and the littlest Grayson went to roost on the rafters first thing. She didn't want them to track her back to Canary's, where she really hoped Damian would go after some heat had died down. He could take care of himself, she hoped. He was a well-trained ninja so sneaking away was his specialty. Not like her--no, she stood out like a sore thumb. What if he was out there, trying to look for her? Just thinking about it made her head swim. No, she had to hide out, and wait, and then try to get back.
Mar'i wanted to go home. She wanted to get home to her real home, where her dad would take care of her and not his sidekick who was always calling her mean names. They'd all be at Wayne Manor safe and sound, where Alfred would bake them apple pie, or brownies, or whatever they wanted. She could smell it...
Wait... she could smell it.
She lifted her nose in the air and took a deep sniff. Something was wafting up toward her and it smelled suspiciously like freshly baked goods. Her tummy rumbled with the reminder that she had no breakfast. "Quiet, you," she whispered to the loud organ, and crawled forward on the rafter as she looked down below. Who was baking in a warehouse? Where were they? Mar'i was determined to find out.

"Almost ready!" Mother spider brandished her trusty timer in her main right hand. It stated thirty seconds left to go for the brownies. "Which means time to gather the ingredients for the finishing touches." Four back arms moved in unison, swiftly opening two drawers and retrieving two shakers and a bag. "I'm missing something." Dozens of fingers danced across the counter as Elisabete scanned her makeshift bakery. "Ah, there you are, you little rascal." With a jump, Mother spider climbed onto the a fridge and plucked a lemon from a fruit basket on top. "A zest of lime... to mask some of the..." The ringing in Mother Spider's right hand interrupted her. She instantly turned around, and with two deft webshots, turned off the heat on the oven and opened it. She then climbed down and carefully slid the brownie pan out.
Crash. Clank. Another interruption. Mother spider didn't let that distract her at first. There was no link pointing at her, indicating that whoever had broken into her warehouse was not aware of her. "I hope it's not another tin soldier poking around." If it was, it was a fresh recruit, one that had not met her before. And he was not hunting for her directly. Therefore not a threat. "Well, lets place you somewhere safe." The baker said to her goods. She would have to place the finishing touches later, but making sure the brownies were cooling down properly was paramount.
Mother spider then climbed up the wall. Moving between sections, she covered the warehouse very fast. That's when she saw the little girl. No, the little neo. With glowing green eyes and raven dark hair. As she slowly lowered herself, she studied the young one. She seemed to be tearing up. Then her stomach growled. Elisabete's heart melted. "You poor, lost one" Her voice was soothing. It wasn't quite her jazz voice, not was it her motherly voice, but something in between. She immediately knew the child was not from this world. The outsiders had these characteristic links. They seemed almost translucent, like the other side was far far away. And they never had more than two or three solid links around them. Though this one had two friends. That was unusual. "Don't be scared. I don't bite. Unless it's brownies. Those don't stand a chance against me." She approached slowly, analyzing the link between her and the girl to strike the right balance and not scare her away. Catching her with a web would not be a great introduction. "It looks to me like you need one. To lift your spirits and find your friends." Or make new ones.

Mar'i had a friend who was half-bull, half human. He said he'd call himself Manotaur when he grew up to be a superhero, like the Greek myth of the Minotaur. She met men who looked like crocodiles, and had seen pictures of Man-bat cropping up in Gotham. She should have been more prepared to see a spider-woman.
She was not. Her eyes widened like saucers and her tiny jaw dropped. Perhaps she was a little scared, especially when the woman noticed her and jumped up to meet her on the rafters. She bum-shuffled herself backwards on the rafter, pushing with her nice shoes all stained green from the park. Moreso, she was cautious, and fascinated by the oddity. Unlike most little girls, and children for that matter, she was never afraid of creepy-crawlies like bugs and spiders. They weren't pleasant, but even the so-called killer wasps couldn't hurt her. They were an important part of nature. Still, she'd be the last to say they were pretty, and she wouldn't list them in a song about her favourite things.
The tension released from her shoulders when she realized that this spider-woman was friendly. Mar'i closed her jaw to a pout and sniffled slightly. Yes, poor her! Everything had simply been awful and while she wouldn't admit it, the little girl wanted nothing more than to be babied and fretted over--especially with delicious brownies. Mar'i wiped her tears with the back of her hand and nodded pitifully.
"The neo police were chasing me because I lost my glasses," she explained. Well, not because she lost her glasses, but they found out she wasn't perfectly human because she lost her glasses. Also she technically didn't lose them, they were stolen right off her face by a pesky teleporting thief. "I flew away and thought I could hide here..." She still wanted to hide here. She tentatively floated off the rafter, demonstrating those same flying abilities that helped her escape.
Her tummy growled again, and Mar'i had the decency to look a little embarrassed. "I'd like a brownie," she admitted softly.
