Conner was created by Lex Luthor to replace Superman who "died" in his fight against Doomsday as he couldn't fathom a world without Superman. He escaped from his incubation tube too early resulting in Conner being a teenager instead of the adult he was supposed to be. He tried taking on the mantle of the man of steel until he came back to life which was when Conner finally accepted the name of Superboy.
Superman wasn't too pleased with having a clone and Conner wasn't happy with his reaction. But Lex managed to get the two to reconcile and the two saw each other as brothers as Superman wasn't ready to be a father at the time. For the next few years, Conner continued his adventures as Superboy growing and maturing as he loved as lost. One day, everything would change for Conner when the Joker tricked Superman into killing his wife and unborn child and destroyed his city with a nuke.
Conner was in Metropolis when that happened and ended up losing Beastboy and Kid Flash. Enraged by his loss, Superman killed the Joker and declared a world wide cease fire. Conner and the Teen Titans attempted to stop Superman by trapping him in the Phantom Zone. During the fight, Superman punch Conner so hard that his rib punctured his heart and offered to save his life by sending him and the other Titans into the Phantom Zone.
The Titans accepted the deal and were freed 5 years later by Batman who was trying to stop Ra's al Ghul's culling of humanity. To save Superboy, the heart of the deceased General Zod was transplanted into him. When Superboy learned that Ra's al Ghul sent Amazo to destroy Delhi, he headed towards the fight after the Kent gave him Clark's Superboy suit. But as he flew towards the fight he was suddenly transported into this world.
