Timeline: Current Previous Threads: Back to the Drawing Board walkitoff.freeforums.net/thread/1209/back-drawing-board Characters Involved: Sketch and Nevermore Location: Outside what's left of Echo Labs It was a dark, cold, foggy night in Denver and Sketch was making her way towards what she hoped to be the place where she had lost some of her memories. One of her sketchbooks was now filled from page to page with bits and pieces of what she could remember; test tubes, needles, cages, and the outline of a person in a white coat, though she could never make out the face as it was always blurred. However, recently a word came into view in her dreams. ‘’Echo…’’ That was it, just the single word. In a last-ditch effort, she managed to find the words ‘’Echo Labs’’ in a newspaper on the street and asked people where this place was. As she made her way towards the location of this ‘’Echo Labs’’ a slight sense of hope overcame her. Hope that she would *finally* be able to get the answers she had been seeking for nearly 6 years. As the young girl made her way down the dark and narrow street, a slight limp in her step as she walked due to a previous injury, that hope was suddenly diminished. At the end of the street and in the apparent location of Echo Labs there was nothing there but rubble. Sadness, anger and frustration overcame Sketch all at once as she looked over the site where the labs seemingly once stood. Breathing deeply and heavily, she bent down and picked up a broken sign. ‘’No…’’ she muttered to herself in disbelief. ‘’No, this can’t be. NO!’’ Sketch screamed in frustration and tossed the sign in anger. ‘’No, no, no NO! Why?! Why me?!! What the hell happened to me?!’’ Sketch pulled out the book with the drawings of her memories in there and tore the pages in frustration, throwing them everywhere and kicking the ground. She sat down on the ground and tucked her knees under her chin, tears started streaming down her face as she felt defeated and lost. Suddenly an odd smell caught her senses. Sketch stood up and looked around, wiping the tears from her face as she didn’t want to be answering anyone’s question about why she was feeling the way she was. The smell seemed to be getting stronger and smelled something like…brimstone? Feeling on edge, Sketch pulled out her other artbook and pencil and quickly made a knife using her powers. ‘’Who’s there?! Show yourself!!’’

Echo Labs...it felt like forever and a day ago since this place went up in flames on all the national news networks, sending headlines over mass media of the travesties that were being performed there, and of the exodus of imprisoned Vagrants and neo-humans, both natural and created there, spilling out into the general public and now on the run. Public opinion was still split, where those on one side decried the horrible mistreatment of their fellow man in cruel facilities such as these, whereas the other claimed that these were dangerous individuals that could not function in a healthy society. Jake kept hoping that the neo-rights activist who invited him to her cause, Calamity, would have contacted him after the lab went down, but that call never came. He couldn't help but feel a pit of dread in his stomach whenever he thought about it, wondering and fidgeting with the burner phone she had given him so long ago. The conversation came up again over dinner with his roommate, the vagrant vigilante, Huntress , and in her usually blunt and sharp-tongued manner, she suggested he go and investigate the remains of the facility for some form of closure. If he found her still there, or any indication that she might have escaped, he can rest easy knowing she's likely fighting the good fight elsewhere and will contact him if he's needed. If not...well, closure was closure, and he could send her to rest properly. But to dwell on it as he was? That wasn't healthy for the mind, and Jake had enough mental and emotional stress to deal with on his regular demon patrols, not to mention the constant concern of possible capture and detainment. And so, after traversing through a few hellscapes to avoid detection from human military, though maybe not so much the demon threats he usually had to deal with, Nevermore ended up in Denver, Colorado, the last place Calamity's notes had mentioned, and the location where the worst crimes against humanity has been unveiled in the last year. Echo Labs was mostly in shambles, and the masked hero silently floated over the barbed wire fencing surrounding the condemned building on small embers, and started taking a look about the ruins. The main floor building was all but destroyed, but the majority of the facility seemed to go many miles down into the earth, as if to a place of Hell of its very own. Probably not too far from the truth, as the rumblings of a demon's snarl rang in his ears, a sound only those tied to magic and the occult could hear, sending an uncomfortable shudder down his spine. Of course this place would be tied to a hellscape. The level of negative emotion here, the horrible things that happened...it might as well be a beacon for those pointy bastards. Suddenly, an angry scream burst out, and Jake's heart practically exploded from his chest, a few violet embers dancing off his hair and shoulders as he ducked behind a fallen slab of concrete, out of sight. Was someone in trouble? Or just royally pissed? The sound of her seemed very young, but no other voices followed or called over hers...Nevermore slipped around the concrete and filled his cloak with fire to take to the air again, landing into a crouch on a higher stack of fallen building scrap to get a better look at the commotion from a safe vantage point. Looks like its just the one girl...what's she doing in a place like this?
Nevermore watched for a moment with great interest, opting to stay quiet for the moment, only for his eyes to widen in surprise when she quickly put pencil to paper and then literally dragged the drawing out into reality in a quick motion. He threw both of his hands up as her attention and literally drawn blade was pulled towards his direction. “Woah, sorry, don't mind me. I'm not here to hurt you, kid, I'm just investigating. I'm a neo-human too. Like you.” He lowered one hand to pick up a small sliver of stone at his feet and held it up so she could see, then let it light ablaze in a tiny purple candleflame. “See? Please put the knife back in the book. I'm used to having pointy things thrown my direction, but it's still a bit uncomfortable when it happens, you know?”Sketch

Sketch gasped in shock and outstretched her arm with the knife in hand so hard it was like she was about to pop her shoulder from it's socket. She *thought* she could sense someone being there just from the random smell of brimstone that crept up her nostrils but was somehow not expecting anyone to actually be there. It caught her off guard a little. ''What the hell?'' she gasped in shock as she saw the man stepping out of the shadows of the streets with what seemed to be a bird-like mask covering his face. Sketch remained in place as the man raised his hands, saying that he wasn't there to hurt her but her lack of trust for anyone kept her on edge. The teenager had recently been through hell with the leader of a drug cartel which resulted in her getting shot in the foot, causing her to now have a slight limp whenever she moved, so her trust in people was even more lacking now. And this guy appearing when she was at her most vulnerable was just coming off as suspicious to her even though he assured her he wasn't there to cause harm. Sketch shook her head and held the knife tightly in her grip. ''No. I'm not putting the knife back in the book. I don't even know you and for all I know you're probably lying to me about not wanting to hurt me'' she said, her voice a little shaky. She watched with slight curiosity as he created a purple candleflame that danced and licked the stone he had just picked up, giving a little light off in the darkness. For a moment Sketch felt a little at peace with the purple candlelight but snapped herself out of that feeling *very* quickly. ''So?'' Sketch questioned. ' 'Just because you're a neo like me I'm automatically supposed to trust you?'' she tightened her grip even more on the knife, keeping it raised at the strange man. ''What are you doing here? Were you following me??''

His hands still up where the girl could see them, Nevermore cocked his head to the side, shrugging his shoulders a bit as he did so. “Eh. Fair point,” he replied plainly, and hopped down from his concrete perch to stand more at her level. “Not a lot you can trust nowadays, with how wonky the world's gotten, right? But, at the very least, I can trust that you don't trust me, and in turn, I know I shouldn't and don't trust you in turn. And with that perfect circle of untrust in play, we know we can furthermore trust that the other is armed, dangerous, but likely doesn't want to cause any problems for themselves by provoking the other.” The cloaked neo unsheathed the baseball bat hooked onto a leather sheath at his hip, twirling it with a flourish and laying it comfortably at rest upon his shoulder. “So as long as we both have our weapons of choice at the ready, which can be used at any point should a wrong move be made, but you know you won't make a wrong move, and I know I won't make a wrong move, we should be good.”
There was a ring in his tone that made it sound as if he were grinning from ear to ear behind the mask as he offered this roundabout logic. “But if it makes you feel any safer, I'm looking for clues on a missing person...and I have no idea who you are, so I'm pretty sure you're not the lady I'm here to see. And believe me, I'd remember a neo who could literally draw a blade like some kind of 3D printer.” Nevermore suddenly looked up and towards the open maw of the ruined laboratory, startling slightly, as if a noise only he could hear snatched his attention. Snapping jaws like bear traps clanged in the deep reaches of his brain, along with an uncomfortable sensation of being stalked for prey. Enough pleasant chatter – time to scope this place out, get the closure he needed from here and potentially seal off a hellscape...before the demon general that created it started hunting. Jake eyed the young girl, thinking carefully. The anger she emanated, anger and fear...and drawn to such a place as this...it was very likely this was the target in the first place, and in good faith, he couldn't just leave her alone to wander into a trap. “I have the distinct feeling,” he said, slowly moving towards the entrance as he spoke and standing just over the edge of the ruined pit that went down, down, down into darkness below, “That if I tell you to move along and play somewhere else, you'll just get indignant, ignore me entirely, and snoop around here anyway, making what should be a simple in and out mission for me into something way more unnecessarily difficult.” Jake shrugged, turning the eerie round lenses of his mask upon Sketch, and gestured she come along with a tilt of his head. “So with that said...you coming?” Sketch

Sketch stood her ground and kept the knife pointed in the direction of the stranger as he hopped off his perch and started addressing her more. ''Good to know we don't trust each other'' she gritted her teeth a little as she watched the stranger unsheathe a baseball bat and twirl it around. Was he planning on beating her to death with it? Sketch didn't feel like that was the case, but at the same time, after all the sh*t she has been through recently she wouldn't be surprised if he wanted to do that. She kept her guard up and kept her eye on the fellow neo incase he did anything else out of the ordinary. ''I'm not one for making the first move if that's what you mean...though I don't know anything about you. I've been through enough in my life to keep my wits about me'' she replied, still holding out the knife at arms length. Sketch's voice was a little shaky as she was reminiscing of the recent run in with the drug lord named Puzzles, an experience she hoped never to happen ever again. Sketch raised an eyebrow as Nevermore explained that he was there to track down a missing person. ''That's nice that you're hunting down a missing person, but it's got nothing to do with me. You're right about me not being the person you want to talk to so go on and just leave me alone!'' her voice was getting more stern with every word as she stood her ground. The young artist sighed under her breath as she knew that her demand to be left alone would not be met. Plus, it somehow seemed unwise to her to be on her own right now. She had barely escaped a drug den with her life, was now injured from that experience and this place that she was drawn to for answers overwhelmed her with a sense of dread and fear. Being on her own in this scenario would be a very bad idea. “Fine, whatever, I’ll go with you. Just so you’re aware I’m here for one reason and one reason only but that's none of your damn business! Do you understand that...whoever you are?'' she glared at the man as she pocketed the knife and followed him. ''Just don't get in my way...'' The young teen ducked under the tape and climbed the fence that surrounded the ruins of 'Echo Labs' and made her way down into the pit, limping a bit as she did so. She cursed under her breath as her injured foot was hurting so much and the pain was shooting up her leg like lightning. Sketch took a deep breath through her nose to overcome the pain she was feeling. The smell of burnt rubble distracted her from the pain as she turned to face her unwanted companion. ''Have you got any bright ideas?''
