GREEN LANTERN
Real Name: Harold Jordan
Alias: Hal, Green Lantern
Title: Highball
Identity: Secret
Age: Mid-30s
Species: Human, Vagrant
Physical Appearance:
Hal stands at about six feet, two inches tall, and weighs in at about 185 pounds, which for his height, gives Hal a well cut, very athletic build. His hair is often kept to medium length, but always well maintained. He carries himself with a swagger that can only come from having spent years as a test pilot. Hal generally doesn't have an "off" day, but whenever he's not wearing his Green Lantern uniform, he's often wearing his pilot uniform complete with brown bomber jacket. His Green Lantern uniform is a complete bodysuit, with white gloves, face mask, and a shining green Power Ring.
Personality:
Hal is a man of great courage, overcoming adversity time and time again. Those traits were what made the Power Ring choose him as the successor of Abin Sur. Unlike the majority of the Green Lantern's, Hal is guided by a strong sense of justice, a personal belief of what's right and what's wrong. One of his most notable, and rather infuriating traits, is his inability to accept defeat even in the darkest of nights. This has allowed Hal to attain victory when all hope felt lost. However, despite all of his virtues, Hal is reckless, often charging first and thinking after. He's also extremely confident, bordering on arrogant. More than once he has allowed his emotions to cloud his better judgment, something that's often gotten him chewed out by the Guardian.
Hal is hard on himself, often beating himself up for weeks, even months for when something went wrong and when he felt that he had the ability to stop, or prevent the destruction. The most prominent example of this was after Hal was playing host to Parallax, an entity that caused Hal to destroy the entirety of the Green Lantern Corp. In an attempt to atone, Hal sacrificed himself for redemption. It had taken a long time, but Hal managed to overcome his guilt and moved on with his life. A small side note; Hal is something of a ladies man. One of the more notable women that he's ever loved was Carol Ferris, his sometime boss who also happens to be one of the Star Sapphires.
Powers:
Oan Energy Conduit: The rings use pure energy supplied by a Power Battery, which in most cases takes the form of bright green light. This energy is the green light of willpower of the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum. Rot Lop Fan, from a race without eyes, perceives it as the sound "F-Sharp" and his 'ring' is actually a bell. A Green Lantern's ring, considered by some to be one of the most powerful weapons in the known universe, has the ability to affect and use fundamental forces of the known universe, including electromagnetic energies such as gravity, radiation, heat, light, and powerful blasts of concussive force. It is also theorized that the ring also has a basis in other dimensional energies commonly called magic by users of such energies. The ring can also create fields of force formed from an unknown energy that is bound by the users' will. The limitations of such use are the skill, knowledge and imagination of the user. Some of the abilities that a Green Lantern Ring has shown are:
- Energy Projection: The ring can be used to fire blasts of Oan energy or create weapons such as projectiles of them. The ring can project beams of force powered by the will of the user. The ring can be used to produce kryptonite and kryptonite radiation. The weapon's power is more an indication of the will of the user. Certain users (i.e. Hal Jordan) have been powerful enough to stagger even Superman. If the user wishes, they can alter the form of the blasts such as Kilowog's "booms."
- Force Field: The ring can create various force fields of various sizes and shapes to protect the wearer and others around him. With the cosmic scope of a Green Lantern's duties, it is only natural that the power ring is designed for operation in space. The ring creates a force field around the wearer, protecting him from the hazards of the void including filtration of stellar radiation and microscopic particulate matter which would ordinarily be fatal should the space debris strike the ring wielder at high speeds. An atmosphere appropriate to the ring wielder's biology is created inside the force-field while body temperature is maintained and waste products are removed. Gravitational stresses which could cause injury are stabilized for the ring wielder. The force field seems to be created instantaneously whether this is due to programming or an instinctive reaction from intensive training has not been established.
- Energy Construct Creation: The ring can form constructs of Oan energy. The primary function of the Power Ring is to provide a weapon capable of transforming the wearer's thoughts into physical constructs through the wearer's strength of willpower. A Green Lantern can create any particular items or construct that they can imagine as long as they have the willpower necessary to will it into existence. The constructs are made out of a tangible form of pure willpower, and they exist only as long as a Green Lantern is fueling it with their willpower. Items created by the rings are not indestructible and are only as powerful as the willpower of the Green Lantern creating them. The types of constructs usually reflects the ring wearer's personality.
- Construct Superstrength: While not superstrength of the conventional sense, a Lantern, while using constructs created by the ring becomes capable of lifting and moving tremendous weights far heavier than 100 tons with little effort.
- Phasing: The Power Ring allows the wearer to pass through certain solid objects such as walls. Which objects that are not penetrable are not known, but it may depend upon the strength of the wearer's willpower and the density of the object's molecular structure.
- Environmental Playback: Upon request, the power ring can recreate a holographic environment based on data in its memory banks. The ring wielder can observe events in a ghostlike state, but the ring wielder cannot alter the outcome of the playback. All objects in the playback will appear in the full spectrum of colors, regardless of the wielder's level of expertise creating simulacra. The power ring will automatically end the playback if outside interference warrants the ring wielder's undivided attention.
- Invisibility & Light Refraction: A ring wielder can render himself invisible by willing the ring to bend light waves around his form, as well as that of the power ring. As Hal's experience grew, he was able to create power ring illusions of people and objects. An invisibility shield was used by him to hide his power ring, which would only become visible when he changed to Green Lantern.
- Energy Twin: The power ring allows the wearer to create an "energy twin" of himself that can travel at far greater speeds than that of the ring wielder's physical form. While the energy twin is active the ring wielder remains motionless, his life force is needed to guide the energy twin. The energy twin can not alter its surroundings and may only be perceived by the Guardians or another ring wielder as a green, ghostlike image. Any knowledge gained by the energy twin is transferred back to the ring wielder's physical form upon recontact with the body. The Guardians frequently used energy twins as a means of contacting a Green Lantern. As a rule, a ring wielder can not create actual, independent duplication of himself as the power ring cannot create life.
- Energy Absorption: The ring can absorb and store other energies. Doing so does NOT replenish the normal store of energy the ring has. A ring that needs recharging but contained a store of electricity could only discharge that electricity, for example.
- Flight: By the manipulation of anti-gravitons and directed molecular movement, the ring allows the user to fly at incredible speeds. In atmosphere, a Green Lantern has been known to fly as fast as Mach 10 in atmosphere by creating an aerodynamic envelope around his body. Towing others, usually within a bubble, his speed is limited to the twice the speed of sound or 1440 mph. In space, Green Lantern's speed can be significantly greater and has been known to approach 99% of light speed in normal space. In atmospheres, air friction is not a hindrance since heat is either absorbed or reflected by the ring's field.
- Wormholes & Spacial Warps: The power ring grants its wearer access to wormholes in space, enabling the ring wielder to rapidly cut time and distance needed for transport. The Guardians established at least one known wormhole to Oa, which required the use of a power ring to enter. Black holes can be navigated by experienced ring wielders. During a battle with Sinestro and his ally, MadGod, members of the Green Lantern Corps of Earth and the Green Lantern Corps of the Klyminade traveled through a black hole to be deposited outside a white hole in Sector 872. The power ring cannot generate a Boom Tube as it needs a Mother Box and a sample of the highly unstable X-Element. There is no known way to duplicate either item even with the power ring. Should a Green Lantern make his way to the other-dimensional worlds of Apokolips or New Genesis through a Boom Tube, the ring will function as it does in the rest of the universe. John Stewart encountered no ring related difficulties during his stay on New Genesis, despite the loss of the Central Power Battery. The ring wielder would still need a Boom Tube to return to his dimension.
- Cellular Regeneration: The ring has an ability to heal physical injuries; minor injuries, like bruises, cuts or scrapes, can take only a few minutes to completely heal. Major injuries, such as broken limbs, can take as long as days, possibly a week or two, to completely heal.
- Electromagnetic Scanning: The ring has a wide range of detection abilities based on the imagination of the user. If one can conceive of it, he can probably detect it. Magical effects like clairvoyance seem to be beyond the scope of the ring. Most normal electromagnetic phenomena are within the range of the ring, including radio, radar, television, infrared, ultraviolet, microwave, and high frequency band communications
- Galactic Encyclopedia: Having the vast knowledge of the Book of Oa to draw upon, each ring functioned as a ready reference on most peoples, stellar events and conditions that may have been seen by other rings or other Green Lanterns. The rings also served as a chronicle of adventures had by the Green Lantern and these mission reports were stored in the Prime Battery on Oa for review and training.
- Universal Translator: Keeping in mind the myriad of worlds, life forms, and cultures throughout the cosmos, it is understandable why the Guardians added a translation system to the power ring. The power ring can translate virtually any language in the universe, facilitating diplomatic encounters rather than violent confrontations. Complications arise when a frame of reference for translation is not available, as evidenced during Katma Tui's induction of Rot Lop Fan into the Green Lantern Corps. Katma Tui had the difficult assignment of explaining the concepts of "light" and "color" to the sightless Rot Lop Fan. She overcame this barrier by using sound rather than light as the basis of the ring's power. Some Green Lanterns, such as the planet form known as Mogo, have used the ring to create an intermediary "being" to expedite communication.
- Ring Duplication: Most Power Rings are capable of automatically duplicating themselves. Each duplicate typically shares the qualities and capabilities of the original ring. While the thought of an unauthorized person getting a hold of a power ring and making duplicates for nefarious purposes, their ability to inflict damage is limited because each duplicate still requires to be recharged by a personal power battery. This was shown when Ganthet, a Guardian of Oa, deputized himself to help fight against the Black Lanterns, and used Hal's rings duplicate.
- Beacon System: A Green Lantern's Power Ring is capable of emitting a distress and homing beacon, leading one Green Lantern to another. The emergency signal can be directed to a neighboring sector, or even as a Corps.-wide alert. The power ring can be ordered to disguise itself to elude power ring wielding trackers. Most often ring wielders will allow the beacon to signal their location to others. The Green Lantern Corps. of Earth found the remnants of the Green Lantern Corps. of The Klyminade by tracking them through their power rings.
- Mind Alteration: As the power ring relies on thought and will to operate, mind tampering is not impossible. The real difficulty lies in properly applying the power. There lies a risk of catastrophic damage to the mind should mistakes be made. A ring wielder can use the power ring to erase portions of an individual's memories. To protect his secret identity as Hal Jordan, Green Lantern created a mental block in the mind of Major Disaster. Green Lanterns have used mind techniques as part of training. New recruits may be subjected to mind scans by other Green Lanterns or the Guardians of the Universe. They are taught to build mental defenses to protect themselves from psionic attack. The power ring can also be used to beam information from the ring wielder to another being, Green Lanterns have used this technique to share information regarding their enemies during combat situations.
- Pocket Dimension: Within the ring exists the possibility of an entire world. When Green Lantern Abin Sur of Ungara defeated the evil sorcerer Myrwhydden, he reduced the magician to submicroscopic size and imprisoned him inside the power ring, within a world created by the Green Lantern's will. This undefined space may be a tesseract or a virtual reality created by the power ring. Whether or not this area exists in all rings has yet to be proven. However, because Hal inherited Abin Sur's ring, we know that he is capable of using this pocket dimension.
- Security Protocol: The rings are programmable. They are coded to the wearer to make them unusable if stolen. The ring use to refuse to take an action that would kill a being unless they are on Oa or with permission, however the Guardians recently removed the lethal force prohibition, first to allow lethal force against members of the Sinestro Corps, then against all enemies of the Green Lantern Corps.
- Preset Conditions: Commands can be stored in the ring to be executed at a later date even if the bearer is not wearing the ring. This ability was demonstrated by Green Lantern Ch'p, who surrendered his ring but ordered it to restrain his enemy after a few moments had passed.
- Thought Relay: Otherwise known as a telepathic link. The rings are linked to each and every Lantern, capable of analyzing their thoughts and emotions.
Abilities:
Indomitable Will: Hal Jordan's will has been described as the greatest in the universe. His power is only limited by his own imagination, making him one of the most powerful superheroes in the universe. He has defeated beings such as Sinestro, Mongul, and even the entire JLA on one occasion. In the future when his evil side, Parallax, went rogue and nearly destroyed and recreated the universe, an alternate Hal from the past was not only able to match Parallax's will but fought him to a stalemate, while the most powerful beings couldn't scratch him.
Expert Hand-to-Hand Combatant: Due to the skills as a boxer that Hal picked up in his off time from the Air Force and Ferris Aircraft, and the training he received at the hands of the Green Lantern Drill Sergeant Kilowog, Hal has proven time and time again to be an exceptional hand-to-hand fighter.
Expert Aviator: Because of his time with the U.S. Air Force, and Ferris Aircraft, Hal has incredible knowledge about the maintenance and operation of a multitude of aircraft used by the governments of the world.
Leadership: Hal has been shown to be quite the capable leader. Having lead waves of the Green Lantern Corp. against countless threats, leading the heads of the other Lantern Corps. and the Justice League, Hal has shown to be able to make quick calls at the right moments to turn the tide of battle.
Weapons/Equipment:
Green Lantern Power Ring: The Green Lantern Power Ring is one of the most powerful, and versatile, pieces of gear in existence. By harnessing Hal's willpower, he's capable of creating anything that his imagination will allow. Force fields, beams of varying sizes and purposes. As great and powerful as the Ring is, it requires recharging from time to time, and every construct that Hal creates drains the charge a little bit. The Power Ring also allows Hal to communicate with others, home in on other Lantern's locations, and will answer questions whenever asked. Basically, it's the greatest piece of tech imaginable. It should be noted that Hal's mastery over the Power Ring enables him to create some of the most powerful constructs out of the entirety of the Green Lantern Corp. When he creates a construct, people often witnesses an "after-burn" behind Jordan of all his stray thoughts unconnected to the job at hand.
Green Lantern Power Battery: Power Batteries are constantly charged by the Central Power Battery to manually fuel about 7200 individual Green Lantern Rings. With few exceptions, the Power Ring was limited to a 24-hour charge and needed to be recharged at the Power Battery on a daily basis. However, that limit has been removed, meaning a Lantern is only obligated to recharge their ring when the power levels are depleted or gone. The amount of energy in a ring is measured by the ring, and relayed to the Lantern via a percentage scale of 0% - 100%. When not in use, the Power Battery resides in a pocket dimension that the Lantern can access at any time.
History:
Hal Jordan is the most well-known Green Lantern, and was the first human to have ever been inducted into the Green Lantern Corps. He has, on many occasions, been heralded as the greatest Green Lantern of all time. He's also a founding member of the Justice League, and has played host to The Entity, Parallax, and The Spectre. Hal was born in Coast City, Californa to Martin and Jessica Jordan. Hal was the middle child, with his brother Jack being the oldest and his brother Jim being the youngest. Growing up, Hal idolized his father who was a test pilot that worked for Ferris Aircraft. One horrible day, Hal's greatest fear happened; his father sadly ended up crashing and dying, right before Hal's eyes. On his 18th birthday, against his family's wishes, Hal enlisted in the Unite States Air Force, as nothing less than a Pilot.
After an unknown amount of time, a dying alien named Abin Sur crash-landed his starship in the Californian desert. Upon realization that he was dying, Abin Sur told his ring to find a worthy successor and the ring chose Hal Jordan for his ability to overcome great fear. The ring, and it's abilities, were explained to him, and Hal accepted, taking up the mantle of Green Lantern. Learning about how the Green Lantern's were actually galactic police officers, it was Hal's job to serve and protect all life within Space Sector 2814. After some time Hal would learn that there were another 3,599 Green Lanterns across the universe, all monitored and empowered by the Guardians.
Hal received training from some of the best Officer's that the Green Lantern Corps., including Drill Sergeant Kilowog, and Abin Sur's closest friend, Sinestro. It was after some time that Hal learned that Sinestro was actually using his powers to subjugate his home planet through fear, and the abuse of his power ring. Hal and Sinestro eventually came to blows, with Hal Jordan emerging victorious. After the battle, Hal Jordan testified to the Guardians, and causing Sinestro to lose his ring, get exiled to another planet and eventually discovering the Yellow Energy of Fear. Sinestro would become the first ever Yellow Lantern, and one of Hal's most reoccurring enemies.
As Green Lantern, Hal patrolled the galaxy, taking on dozens of missions in space. When he wasn't patrolling, he continued to spend his time working at Ferris Aircraft, where he'd constantly pursue his boss, Carol Ferris. Green Lantern was also a founding member of the Justice League of America, along with the Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Aquaman, and Martian Manhunter. This group first banded together when the Appellaxians invaded the Earth, and realized that they were all stronger when working together. The Flash, Barry Allen, and The Green Arrow, Oliver Queen, would become two of Hal's closest friends.
Hal's history is long and filled with dozens of heartbreaks, tragedies and triumphs. Some of the worst heartbreaks were Hal's home city, Coast City, being completely destroyed. The result was Hal overexerting himself, abusing his power, and becoming the host of a parasitic entity called Parallax. Parallax was a secret kept by the Guardians; an entity that lived within the Central Oan Power Battery. Parallax was the physical embodiment of the yellow energy of Fear, the polar opposite to the green energy of Willpower. As Parallax, Hal was one of the greatest villains that the DC Universe had ever seen. After countless of battles, Parallax was eventually defeated at the hand of the combined heroes of Earth.
Parallax proved to be the first of many moments in Hal's life where his back would be against the wall. War of the Light, where Hal would learn that there are more colored Lanterns than just the Green Lanterns (Hal would become a Red Lantern, and a Blue-Green Lantern hybrid). Blackest Night, where every dead hero and villain came back to become Black Lanterns, which would see Hal becoming a host for The Entity, the living embodiment of the White Light of Creation that gave birth to all living things in the universe, turned Hal and several other revived heroes, into White Lanterns. It was during the Blackest Night event, Hal teamed up with a representative of the other Lantern Corps., Atrocitus of the Red Lantern Corps, Carol Ferris of the Star Sapphire Corps, Indigo-1 of the Indigo Tribe, Larfleeze of the Orange Lantern Corps, Saint Walker of the Blue Lantern Corps and Sinestro of the Sinestro Corps.
After the events of the Blackest Night, Hal had believed that things would settle down for a time, but how wrong he was. An event of unknown power had rocked the universe, causing massive amounts of devastation on an untold amounts of worlds. One of the most worrying events was the destruction of Wayne Manor, leaving everyone to wonder; what happened to Batman and Wonder Woman? Hal, The Flash, Martian Manhunter, and Cyborg were all working together to figure out what had happened. But no matter how many times they all analyzed the remains, all it ever told them, "Unknown remnant energy". After about five months though, they finally got a lead, another event was happening on Mars.
Hal hauled ass to Mars, but ended up passing through a black hole, one that he had never encountered before. He appeared in roughly the same location that he had entered the black hole through. Confused, Hal continued on to Mars, but found it barren. He tried to contact J'onn J'onzz telepathically it was useless, J'onn didn't seem to hear him. What in the hell is going on? Hal had thought. He flew to where the watchtower was supposed to be, but it wasn't there. Hal looked at his Ring, "Where are we exactly?" Earth. "Helpful as always." He thought, mildly annoyed, kind of confused, but very excited at the prospects of discovering new things.
Weaknesses:
I Am But A Man: As overpowered as Green Lantern is, at the core of everything he is still a man. He CAN be killed, but it'll take far more effort than most can manage.
I'm Not Perfect, but Pretty Damned Close: Hal is overly confident, bordering on arrogant and that arrogance has cost him time and time again.
In Need of a Recharge: Green Lantern's power ring requires recharging every now and then. In order to recharge he has to speak the Green Lantern Oath.
It Seems You Weren't...Concentrating: If his Ring is taken off, Hal reverts back to his normal human form. This is when he's most susceptible.
Red Power Rings: The Red Power Rings of the Red Lanterns can dissolve the energy from a Green Power Ring.
Other Information:
Although usually the rings require that their wearer be conscious for active usage, the Guardians have shown the ability to control them no matter what their regular user might be doing. In some cases, this means moving the Lantern in question without their consent or sometimes even knowledge.
While he is a Green Lantern, Hal has been shown wearing Power Rings of different colors; Red, Orange, Blue (a Blue-Green hybrid), Yellow, Black, and White.
I am mostly a Marvel guy, but I love Green Lantern and will do my best to stay true to the character. Helpful comments and critiques are welcome throughout my time as Hal.
Any and all information within this application can be found here, here, and here. It should be noted that I did copy a fair amount from the Green Lantern Ring wiki in regards to power. I did my best to adjust the wording, but somethings were worded well as they were.
