Name: Ereshkigal, Nergal, Mictecacihuatl, Mictlantecuhtli, Donn, Yama, Jeoseung Sacha, Izanami, Anubis, Osiris, Nephthys, Hades, Persephone, Thanatos, Hel, Proserpina, Mors, Pluto, Viduus, Dea Tacita, Februus, Mania, Baron Samedi, Santa Muerte, Anguta, and countless others
Alias: Death
Age: Unknown
Gender: Neutral, both, and neither
Species: Everything and Nothing
Occupation: Wherever they are needed, when the time is right
Personality: Death is, at the very base form of their existence, a guide, a comforter, a consoler, and a motivator. They understand that they may seem frightening to those they visit, that all this rubbish about dying and likely moving on towards a new and unknown world, leaving their loved ones behind, is something that most mortals are resistant to. With this in mind, Death uses a gentle hand in a velvet glove upon those that are not much longer for this world, offering comforts and kind words, in order to guide them the right direction, but still remains firm and resolute. This moment is an inevitability, a promise made at the start of life, no matter how much the dying soul may cry or plead or beg to be given more time. Death knows what must be done, and does their best to make it as smooth a transition as possible.
On the other hand, Death will also visit one at what might appear to be the end of life, ready to allow themselves to simply pass, but it is not yet their time to do so. Only Death itself knows when a soul's time to go is, and if one is arriving too early, they will offer a firm knuckle rapping in the form of a strong motivation to keep going forward. Accepting one's death is one thing, giving up on life at a moment that seems bleak or hopeless...that is entirely another.
Power and Abilities:
When the Time is Right: Death knows exactly where they need to be at any given moment, and will appear to have always been just behind the corner or walking out from the shadows when meeting for an appointment. They don't need to be summoned or take public transit or worry about distances – they are always right in the place they need to be at the exact right time.
Who Will You Meet at Death's Door?: Whether the dying soul is meant to be crossing over or not, Death will appear to them in a form that would best guide them the direction they need to go, whether it's to come quietly into that long goodnight or scare them back into the coil of the living. This is always in the shape of someone important to the character in question, who can either offer them words of comfort or motivation to keep going. These forms can be of those that have previously passed, those that are currently in another dimension, or those that are still alive – the point is that they offer, in this critical moment, what the dying character needs to hear.
Reaper of Souls and Guide to the Afterlife: Death can guide the souls of the dead beyond the veil and between dimensions to the place of eternal rest. They can only take them as far as their home realm of The Gray Veil, the place that exists between the world of the living and the great hereafter, and no further. The soul must take that final step to their final resting place on their own.
History: From the moment the first breath in the universe was drawn has Death existed, awaiting that all too important appointment to collect the final one. Throughout written and unwritten history, this figure has been present at the end of every sentient life, from those of man, of gods, of entire civilizations, of whole worlds. Death has no true history, for death is history, a reaper of souls and a guide to the next life. They've been given many names by many cultures, but has roamed and worked long before those cultures formed themselves out of mud and long after they found themselves crumbling back into dust. As long as there has been Life, as long as there will be Life, Death will follow.
