THE MANDARIN
Real Name: Unknown
Alias: Gene Khan, Tem Borjigin, Zhang Tong, Arnold Bock, The Master
Identity: Secret
Age: Unknown
Species: Human
Physical Appearance: Just as his history is different depending on who is asked, so to is his appearance. Some who claim to have met him face-to-face say he is an incredibly fit Chinese man with long black hair, a goatee, and the finest suits money can buy. Others say he is an old man, weathered and with bright white hair kept in a topknot. Those familiar with the terrorist attacks of the Ten Rings say he resembles the actor Trevor Slattery who had once been hired to impersonate him, often clad in traditional Imperial robes strangely paired with sunglasses. People who believe in the mysticism surrounding him have claimed he is but a spirit while some villains formerly employed by him allege that he is green skinned, with pointed ears and reptilian hands. The only thing that is agreed upon by all is that he bears ten rings, one upon each finger, each with a distinctive gem within.
Personality: The man who calls himself The Mandarin relishes in the mystery surrounding him and as such is something different to each person and organization who meets him, but regardless of role he remains convinced of his own superiority to every other being on the planet, thinking all are but tools to serve him or die for displeasing him. Whether it is because he possesses the rings or genuinely believes himself to deserve everything due to birthright, his goal is to control the world and all aspects of it including technology and the mystical. He is ruthless in his pursuit of his goal caring not for innocent lives lost and dealing with failure swiftly.
Although he schemes with great patience and the larger picture in mind, he is wrathful, willing to cause large-scale destruction in retaliation for sleights or in order to achieve greater power. He also appears to have a need to prove that the East is greater than the West in all things, his focus on mystical means of accomplishing his goals a part of his belief that Eastern magic is greater than Western technology.
Powers: Chi Mastery- as a part of his martial arts skills he learned to control his Chi to such a degree that he can exist without the need for food or drink and can focus his Chi in order to give himself above average strength.
Abilities:
Master Martial Artist- The Mandarin is an excellent combatant, using his Chi to perform nearly superhuman maneuvers in close combat. He can cripple, maim, or kill depending on his intention with little more than his fists and feet.
Genius Level Intellect- Incredibly smart Mandarin has forged himself into one of the foremost scientific minds, reverse engineering technology from an advanced alien race and rivaling Tony Stark on many occasions.
Multilingual- Mandarin speaks English and Chinese fluently and easily picks up other languages if need be.
Weapons/Equipment:
The Ten Rings-
Remaker: Allows him to manipulate things on a molecular level such as solidifying gases, turning the air toxic, and changing his appearance and clothing
Influence: Generates various concussive beams
Spin: Manipulate the air either to fly or to move objects offensively, such as creating miniature tornadoes
Spectral: Projects a beam that can atomize inanimate objects, effectively disintegrating them before having to recharge.
Nightbringer: Generates shadows and darkness blocking sight and helping to hide the wearer
Daimonic: Allows him to manipulate electromagnetic energy in a variety of ways including a light blast, magnetic levitation, a gravity field, and holographic illusions
Incandescence: emit beams of combustible flame
The Liar: projects mental images that fools the senses and temporarily paralyze targets
Lightning: Generates electrical discharges
Zero: Projects waves of ice and cold energy that can be manipulated in many ways.
History: The Mandarin’s origins are a mystery. Some believe he is an ancient warlord, reborn into the modern era to conquer the world. Others say he was a petty criminal of poor station who happened to stumble upon his rings by pure happenstance. One theory even states he was an archaeologist who found great power during a dig. Whatever the truth the man who would become known as The Mandarin did indeed come to possess ten rings of great power that he has used to build a criminal empire spanning all segments of existence, from mystical to high technology and business. Whether they are magic or alien tech as some have argued matters little, for The Mandarin seeks to control the world.
For many years he operated as something of a myth, a legend whose will was carried out by the Ten Rings, a terrorist organization that helped spread his influence. Then however, came the imposter in the form of actor Trevor Slattery, a false Mandarin propped up by deranged scientist Aldrich Killian. After Slattery’s arrest and Killian’s death at the hands of Tony Stark, The Mandarin emerged from the shadows. First seeking revenge against the actor he broke into the prison he was being held in, using his operatives to extract him and bring him before the genuine article for punishment. Next he sought to punish Stark who, years prior, had escaped the Ten Rings when he created his first set of Iron Man armor. Quietly attacking Stark Industries business interests and funding other enemies Tony had made, he waited until Stark was reeling from the Ultron incident to fully reveal himself, sending the monstrous biomechanical dragon Fin Fang Foom to crush Iron Man.
Unfortunately, the dimensional rift that opened in the middle of their battle sent Stark to another realm, the energy Iron Man used to repel Foom damaging Mandarin’s observation platform and depositing the villain on the same New Earth as his armor clad foe. For the last year he has been working to rebuild his empire in secret, welcoming the chance to bring yet another world under heel. Now he is ready to strike, to take advantage of the turmoil brewing between Neo-Humans and the native people’s of New Earth to conquer them all, starting with the destruction of his enemy the Invincible Iron Man.
Weaknesses: The Mandarin himself, despite being skilled and possessing great power, is still a man. His pride and temper can easily be exploited by a clever enemy. The Rings themselves, while powerful, create electrostatic reactions between each other when used, indicating that they were never meant to be wielded together. The disintegration ring in particular gets a single shot before having to recharge for 20 minutes and others can be caused to malfunction with magnetic pulses. Lastly, anything that threatens his vision of himself, that tries to undermine his belief that he is the ultimate authority will drive him to distraction or even obsession until he can prove it wrong.
Other Information:
The Mandarin is a staff controlled character, meaning any staff member can use him or his forces in a thread. See the NPC area for information on his organization and players can feel free to write the different factions into situations if they so choose. Faceless goons to slaughter, robots to battle, and ninjas to dodge there is bound to be something you can use for a story.
