Timeline: After A Haunting in the Park Previous Threads: N/A Characters Involved: Static Location: Side Streets of New York
Feet pounded against the tiles in the hallway. The mission had been going well. Bust in, take down some bad guys, leave before the Gotham police force showed up. It had been going alright up until a few of said criminals decided to escape out one of the side doors.
“I’ll get them, you finish up here,” Artemis called over to Static as she shoved the arrow she had in her hand back into her quiver as she raced off. She had the men in her sights now and as they turned a corner she slid on the tiles, her hand pressing up against the other wall as she pushed herself off it. One of the men lagged behind and she pulled around one of her net arrows and fired it at him catching his legs. The man went down hard, the slam on the ground from his impact ringing out.
The green clad archer never missed a stride as she leaped over the downed villain and raced off after the others, and then things got weird. She heard Static on her Shock Vox saying that he had wrapped up everything from his side and was following after. Artemis didn’t really have time to reach down and reply as she had started to gain on the men in front of her.
The corridor behind her however darkened as if the lights started going out. Except it was completely black, swallowing any light that might’ve come from Artemis’ side. Not only that, it was rushing right towards her and gaining. The tiled floor seemed to drop off as it moved, the pieces falling into a void beneath and then it passed the girl. The corridor seemed to twist into blackness and as Artemis’ right foot hit the floor, the tile fell away and she started to fall.
“What the……..” Artemis began but then flailed as she fell into the void reaching out to try and catch hold of something for stability, but there was nothing and she letting out a scream. ___________________________________________________________________________ She didn’t know what was happening. She just knew that she was falling, and falling at a ridiculous rate. Her head felt heavy and she found it difficult to keep her eyes opened as the blackness continued to surround her. Artemis had no idea how she was still falling at this stage, but the feeling of weightlessness was far too noticeable. ___________________________________________________________________________ The wind rushed past her ears as she was spat out by the void. A loud bang sounded as she hit the handrail of a fire escape on the side of an apartment block, her bow dropping out of her hand as her body was flipped and began racing to the ground. If she had only closed her eyes to try and ignore the fact that she was falling, hoping that it was a dream and that she had been knocked out in a fight, she was now quite clearly unconscious with a small cut on her forehead.
Thanks go out to Silv for the template!

"Ha! Way too easy!" he replied to his partner with a grin as two long tendrils or crackling energy fastened a pair of guns to the wall beside him.
It always made him laugh to see the looks of confusion and terror on peoples' faces as they realised that they were well and truly without options. Of course, that was only true for one of the pair of mean, who raised his hands rather than get hit with a bolt of lightning like his already fallen comrades, the other deciding to make a last-ditch attempt at escape.
Virgil casually took off after the guy, already pulling his Shock Voxx from his pocket with his left hand as he extended his right one toward the fleeing man.
"We're all good here" he said preemptively, a coil of blinding light bursting forth like a snake and undoing the buckle of the running man's belt. The man's trousers dropped around his ankles suddenly and his forward momentum introduced his face to the concrete floor before he found himself bound with his wrists and ankles together by his own piece of apparel.
With a laugh and a smile, he turned back on himself in the air with a dramatic half-twist loop and sped past the man who had surrendered. The man looked at him approaching with a face that begged for mercy and he got it, in the form of being thrown up to the ceiling and stuck there like a gangster-shaped light fixture.
Artemis probably had the other runners handled by now, but just in case she hadn't he decided to fly out the window through which he'd arrived and take a shortcut round to where the men were fleeing to. Sure enough, a fire door flew open and the last man to evade capture was looking the wrong way over his shoulder. He never saw Virgil until he was bowled over by a mid-air tackle Saucer-first. Using the metal bar that opened the fire door to bind the criminal, he looked up preparing to gloat that Artemis had been to slow before his bubbly demeanour was destroyed by the sound of a scream.
Immediately all cockiness and laughter drained from his face.
He could see the corridor succumbing to an encroaching darkness that swallowed the terrain. Ebon? Here?!
Channelling power into the disc he sped forward as she slipped, the green of her costume vanishing into the black.
"NO!" he called out, pumping more power into his speed and diving heard first into oblivion without a second thought. If she was being kidnapped by someone, then he would damn well be there to make sure she wasn't gone for long.
This wasn't the same.
He'd been pulled through shadow before by Ebon, the translocation was instantaneous. He didn't know what this was, it was like being in a vacuum. No matter how fast he tried to go, how far he reached out to that rapidly disappearing bastion of colour in this endless expanse of dark, he couldn't catch her.
He could feel nothing but the pounding of his heart and see nothing except for her.
His orientation let him see the sudden appearance of light from behind her and the sudden appearance of wind at the speed he was travelling made him choke on his breath. But he didn't let it stop him. They were a good distance up in the air and she didn't appear to be in control of her falling. He needed to get to her before she was badly hurt, or worse.
Everything he had wasn't enough to reach her before her head collided with the metal of a fire escape, the clanging of the metal causing him to wince involuntarily.
As her body hurtled toward the solid asphalt of the ground he pushed himself to breaking point and threw what energy he had out at her in a lightning bolt of salvation.
Just.
She was hovering limp barely two feet off the ground, suspended in the air by a purple-tinted tendril of pure energy.
He exhaled.
He let himself relax and let the adrenaline flowing through his body subside a little as he pulled her up into his arms. She had a cut on her head and wasn't conscious, but the rise and fall of her chest told him that things could have been a lot worse.
He surveyed the area, confused as to where they were and who or what had brought them here, but right now he had something much more important to focus on. He took off into the sky and searched from above for a place that they could recuperate. She could have a concussion with such a blow to the head but he couldn't exactly take her to a hospital in full crime-fighting gear.
Far enough away by air that he thought they would be safe from possible enemies, he carefully lowered them down on the roof of a building that had been set up as some kind of rooftop patio. He stepped off the Static Saucer and left it where it was for the moment, gently resting the unconscious body of Artemis on a bench. A quick flash was all that was needed to then recover the disc and fold it up, returning it to its reserved space in his jacket.
He wanted to look around and do recon, but there was no way that he was going to leave her alone in this state. His gaze wandered around the area to check once again it was safe, one hand rubbing the back of his neck while he figured out what he should do.
After some deliberation, he took a seat on the bench beside Artemis, raising her head very carefully before resting it on his lap. This coupled with the draping of his jacket over her was the best he could think of for now to keep her comfortable, but the slight rose-tint to his cheeks betrayed his mild embarrassment at his actions.
A part of him was eager to see her wake up soon so they could figure out what the hell had happened, but another part wanted this moment to last a little longer.
She was definitely going to give him attitude for this.

Artemis felt like she was still falling, and she didn’t seem to be waking up. 5 minutes past. Then 10. Then 15. In fact, by the time her senses slowly began to return to her the first thing she heard was the sound of sirens far off in the distance and the cars in the street below. Followed by the feeling of one hell of a pounding headache. She hadn’t even registered that her head was on Virgil’s lap until she moved.
A hand came up to her forehead as she groaned feeling where she had gotten hit. Although the minute she touched where her wound was, it stung and she hissed out, wincing as she……
Wait…..
Her eyes flashed open at that moment and they locked onto Virgil’s. The formation of her death glare was all to clear and she moved sitting up rather quickly. She came to regret her decision almost instantly by hissing out again and putting her hand back to holding her head with her eyes closed. Dizziness… she moved too quick…..Damnit.
“What the hell did I hit?” she grumbled, the question just thrown out. It was more of a question to herself and she didn’t really want an answer but she knew she’d get one. She moved slow as she took off her mask. She looked down at it pausing as she thought about the darkness that not only had engulfed her, but somehow Virgil as well, and then she folded her mask up and placing it on the arm of the bench for now.
She sat quietly, looking around the roof with her back to Virgil. Her glare was still present on her face, half due to where she had woken up on Virgil’s lap and the other half due to the pain in her head. Mostly trying to get rid of the heat that had risen in her cheeks. Why had they not tried to address this fact to each other yet? she thought to herself. Right now was really not the time to either. Her splitting headache was painful yes, but that wasn’t the only thing to worry her. They had clearly been spit out in some other city. Turning on the bench, her boots hit the roof top as she moved into a more comfortable position.
“Where are we anyway?," she paused adding before Virgil had a chance to speak, "Did you get a chance to look around? I was clearly not going anywhere,” Artemis said, the slight venom in her voice unintentional as she looked over to the other benched hero. Slinging her quiver over her head she set it down on the ground beside her before she lay back against the bench looking up at some of the other buildings around them.

How he'd gone from watching over her to gently stroking his hair with his hand was anyone's guess. The absentminded motion as an extension of the worried look that gripped his features. He'd taken a small strip of gauze and tape (a habit he'd picked up after years of crime fighting), and at least covered the wound on her head, but the fact she remained unconscious gave him a sinking feeling in his heart.
When she gently stirred he was overcome with a feeling of relief, a deep sigh escaping his lips before it was cut short by the look of doom in her eyes.
Somehow, he'd forgotten she would be mad.
She sat up fast and he immediately jumped to his feet and took a few steps away, hiding his embarrassment with an equally sudden retreat. She asked him what she'd hit and he turned side on to her, one hand rubbing the back of his neck in reassurance as he struggled to look at her.
"Fire escape" was all he said, failing to mention that her descension hadn't ended there. That said, she would have been hurt in a lot more places if that's all that happened and she wasn't stupid enough not to know that.
He hesitated for a few moments as she reoriented herself, stealing glances in her direction while his cheeks grew less hot. He let out a cough and went to ask her if she was okay, but he was cut off by her request for a status update. He expected that she'd get straight to business, that seriousness was one of the things he liked about her.
Careful Virgil.
"That's uh, I don't know." he said apologetically, once again his hand nervously rubbing the back of his neck. "You were hurt and I wasn't gunna leave you alone"
Realising the insinuation of that statement and the worried tone he'd used, he immediately turned away from her again. Why did all their conversations get so awkward lately?! His solution to the problem, instead of talking about it, was to draw the disc from his pocket and drop it in front of him.
"I'll take a look now" he said quickly with the briefest of glances in her direction, before stepping onto the disc as it unfurled with electric current and taking off before she could say anything in protest. Effectively running away from the awkward air between them.
Smooth move Virgil.
Unfortunately for Virgil, it took him less than a minute to find what he was looking for. An obvious clue to where they were was clearly visible once he'd gained enough height to see over the surrounding buildings. How in the world...
Taking out his Shock Voxx he pressed the button on the side and used it to communicate with his most trusted partner and life-long friend. He'd know what to make of this situation.
"Gear, can you read me?"
Nothing.
"Gear come in, something weird just happened."
Still nothing. No return static, no indication at all that there was anyone on the other end to receive his message. If Gear was busy or unable to talk he always sent something back. In fact, now that he focused, he couldn't feel the faint signal from his Shock Voxx anymore. The only one he could feel was the one beneath him. The one with Artemis.
Urged on by a sense of dread Virgil returned to the rooftop where Artemis was waiting, his skin a shade whiter than when he'd left. When he spoke his eyes were distant, his mind processing the information he'd received. Something similar had happened to him before.
"Do you want the good news or the bad news?" he said, still staring into space, afraid to rest his eyes on her.

Artemis looked over to him with a raised eyebrow, followed by rolling her eyes as he said that he didn’t want to leave her alone. She’d never admit it but she did appreciate what he did, even the small bit of gauze and tape she now had on her head. She didn’t reply either as she watched him take off to go and investigate where they were.
Looking around the area for her bow, she let out a rather long sigh and sat back on the bench when she realised that it was nowhere near her. If her bow was the only thing that was missing, she could live with that but she would definitely like it back. She had grown attached to that silly piece of equipment even though she was sure she could get another.
Closing her eyes as she leaned back she just listened to everything around her. Artemis looked content, but it was also helping her to work out what to do with her injury. She had hit a fire escape. Yup, that clearly hurt. She didn’t feel the need to throw up which was a good thing though. Means she wasn’t concussed, well she thought she wasn’t.
Guess she would find out when they start moving.
She couldn’t help the smirk though as she was pretty sure whatever sound was made as she hit the fire escape probably didn’t help Sparky’s worry. She had a feeling he followed her through the blackness when he seen her falling. It would be something he’d do.
Her thoughts were interrupted by the return of Virgil and she opened her eyes looking over to him as he asked whether she wanted to hear the good news or the bad news. It was the look on his face though that had her more worried and she stood up.
“Bad news first, good news after….unless there is only bad news,” Artemis replied, her eyes narrow as she listened trying to concentrate on this than the splitting headache she had gotten from standing.

"Right, so, uhm." he began, searching for the right words to explain the predicament they were in and how best to relay his conclusion to her. This was not the weirdest thing that had happened to him, but that didn't mean that she would believe what he was saying at face value. Well. He'd just have to go for it.
"So a while ago I encountered this dude named Timecode. He was a bad guy, that had this time machine, and it kind of exploded, and I ended up in the future where I met myself and I was awesome and there was a new batman and-" He'd gradually begun to talk faster and faster, the verbal diarrhoea threatening to never stop. Until he saw the look on her face.
Coughing in an attempt to alleviate some of his embarrassment, he muttered an apology and tried to start again.
"I uh, can't get a hold of gear. Or anyone, actually, with the Shock Vox. The only one I can feel is yours. And the last time that happened, I was in the future." He looked at her with a 'I know that sounds unbelievable look' and rubbed the back of his neck nervously.
"I can't guarantee that's the case, but whatever that weird black anomaly was, we're not in Kansas anymore." His brow furrowed, half in worry of the situation and whether or not she'd take what he said at face value, and decided to add another piece of evidence. "They've not gone dark like this randomly either, if that's what you were thinking. And if it was the effect of whatever that was, ours would've stopped working too."
Demonstrating that they worked fine, he levitated his out and did a small test, the sound of his own voice emanating from Artemis's pocket.
"That's the bad news." he said gingerly, returning the handheld communication device to his pocket.
"The good news is, unless we've arrived on the planet of the apes, we're in New York."
Suddenly, the image of Gorilla Grodd crossed his mind and his eyes widened.
"God I hope we're not on the planet of the apes..."

The green clad archer watched him begin to speak before her face went deadpan. Raising her eyebrow as he tried to explain what had happened to him before at a millions miles per hour was really not going to help with her sore head. She hoped her facial expression would get her mood across and it did as he finished saying that he thought they were in the future.
The future. That was the bad news. Well if this happened before to him, surely there was a way back right? Virgil would clearly see that Artemis was pondering on everything he had and was still saying. She had her arms folded and was starring at the ground to the left of her while chewing the inside of her cheek. She was pouting slightly as she tried to logic the situation in her own head before she would speak again.
Then it was her turn to do some thinking as he then said the good news was that they were in New York. New York? Wait they had been in Gotham beforehand. So it wasn’t just time travel involved here. Space had to be too then, well to an extent. It was all interconnected anyway.
She glossed over the reference to the planet of the Apes.
“If we’re going with the theory that the void that we came through was time travel related considering that the Shock Vox’s that we have are working, how did we end up in New York? We were in Gotham,” she replied as she gestured to him and then the sky that they had just dropped out of. She paused for a second before continuing, her hands falling to her sides.
“Ok so, we’re dealing with Spacetime, because I don’t think what we fell through had anything to do with magic….” she muttered, clearly trying to start the foundations of coming up with a plan. She was going to speak again, her mouth forming an O as though there were words there, but it was gone as her face crumpled up into confusion and then looked to the side as her arms folded again. It was still a lot to process and she sighed as she moved to sit down again. Her head felt like it was splitting again just talking about that.
She would listen to Virgil if he spoke as she sat on the bench, her head in her hands and her elbows on her knees, “guess we need to figure out where or rather when we are and if we can get back home,” she let out a sigh, before hissing, “damn it, I’d take Onyx throwing me into a wall again over this headache.”

There it was, that deadpan glare he was so used to seeing nowadays that told him he wasn't being clear. When he'd first met her, that glare used to make him think that she hated him, but there was never a part of him that wanted to run away from her. He believed that under that exterior was a kind soul, that was just the way she had learned to express herself. Besides, her pouting accented her lips-
Focus, Virgil.
He nodded along with what she was saying. He didn't underestimate her intelligence and so he didn't feel the need to explain that the concept of time and space was actually one and the same. He wasn't sure if what they'd seen was the cause of magic or not however, the sudden appearance of such an anomaly could well have been because of magical influence. A concept he hadn't believed until he'd met Shazam...
His brow furrowed and chocolate eyes looked worriedly at Artemis when she spoke about her headache.
"Are you okay?" he asked, tone matching his worried features as he approached her, leaning in quite close to get a look at whether or not there was swelling around the minimal first aid he had applied.
"You know I'm still sorry about that Onyx thing..." he said apologetically, nervously rubbing the back of his neck. "We can wait here for a bit to see if you feel a little better before moving on."
In Virgil's opinion, he would've liked it if she wasn't hurt at all...
"I..." he trailed off, eyes looking into hers in their close proximity for a moment, before he backed away quickly and coughed, turning away from her again as he had done before.
"I'm sorry I didn't catch you quick enough."
There was a part of him that knew that there was no reality that he could've been fast enough. And if they hadn't split up as they did, some of the criminals would've have gotten away. But he still blamed himself. She always seemed to get hurt somehow when they were paired together. He wasn't strong enough.
He looked at her from the corner of his eye to see if she forgave him or not and finally noticed that something was missing. Concerned as he was before about her injury he hadn't paid enough attention to everything else.
"Wait, where's your bow?"

“I’ll survive,” Artemis muttered, as she watched him from the corner of his eyes moving over towards her to check on her injury. As he looked there was a little bit of bruising and only a tiny bit of swelling that ice would quickly fix. She looked up to him as he began to apologise for what had happened the first time they had met
“It’s alright, really, not your fault,” she replied, shaking her head, “I’m pretty sure we had that conversation more than once. If we can stay for a bit so I can get my head screwed on straight that’d be great,” she gave a small awkward smile.
The awkward smile then faltered as she watched Virgil move away from her after he began to speak and then….apologised for not catching her quick enough.
Ok, now he was being an idiot.
Artemis rolled her eyes, shook her head took a breath in and stood. Virgil would clearly see her do so out of the corner of his eyes. So much was happening right now, with everything and as Virgil asked where her bow was she had already crossed the distance between them…. she rested a hand on his cheek…..and then kissed him. It wasn’t a forceful kiss against his lips, it was gentle, unsure and lasted long enough that when she broke away her cheeks began to go scarlet as her hand dropped from his cheek and moved to her side, “sorry….I just...with everything that’s happening, we could be in the future, we don’t know what will happen when we get off this roof, it could be completely hostile down there, I may or may not be concussed and if you hadn’t caught me I’d probably be in a worse state, my bow is probably still where ever we dropped in,” Artemis began to ramble, looking away from him and took a deep breath in letting out a sigh, “it’s alright if you don’t….you know….feel the same way.”

Virgil was more than happy to stay here on the roof where the two of them were probably safe. Without knowing the extent of her injury yet; he felt uncomfortable venturing out into what could be a hostile world, though from first glance from above everything seemed to be as he would expect normal life to be. The last thing he wanted was for her to have to fight in her condition.
When he saw her walking over to him, his head concluded that he had made a terrible mistake.
He recalled that more than once she had reprimanded him for apologising too often, especially about things that weren't entirely his fault. She looked strangely serious and when her hand raised he closed his eyes and braced himself for what could possibly be a slap for his 'being stupid'.
The hand made contact with his face, but not at the speed that he was expecting. He opened his eyes as she turned his head in just enough time for her to kiss him.
Complete. Brain melt.
His body went completely rigid save for the rapid blinking of his eyes. His face beet red, mouth slightly open in disbelief. For a single fleeting moment, he asked himself whether what had just happened had really happened. But there was no refuting it, especially now as she began to talk.
It had been so unexpected, so unsolicited, that he had absolutely no idea what to say. He barely heard her excuses for her actions, his mind racing faster than it ever had before. This was completely unlike being passionate with a project, this was something equally as powerful as it was frightening.
There were a thousand things he wanted to say to her as she looked away. A thousand things he'd thought about when he was alone. What he would say if it actually happened, how to make it happen in the first place. But he was ill prepared for this.
He would never be able to properly explain why he did what he did next; but of all the reactions he chose to take in this, his golden moment of opportunity, Virgil Ovid Hawkins... Ran away.
He went from still as a statue and struggling to make any sound whatsoever, to immediately turning, dropping the saucer to the ground and taking off with it. In seconds he had vanished from the rooftop.
WHAT. THE HELL. WAS THAT.
His heart was still beating so hard he could hear it in his ears, threatening to push the blood out of his body. Despite the chill winds of his flight, he felt so incredibly hot, his face flushed with embarrassment and now... shame.
Why did he leave her there? Why didn't he say something? That was it. That was the moment he'd been waiting for since the first time he'd met her. Of all the things he could have done in that situation-
WHY DID HE RUN AWAY?!
Deep in the process of beating himself up over what he would later define as the greatest blunder of his life, he was almost too distracted to realise where he was going. Even if Virgil's mind was preoccupied with how cataclysmically dumb he was, there was a part of him still that knew what it was doing.
After a short distance, he dove down into the city.
When he returned to the rooftop, it was clear by his features that he was a lot calmer than when he had left. His features quite solemn, brow furrowed with regret. It was the kind of face someone wore when they had done something they wish they hadn't; or was about to break some bad news.
"I..." he started once he'd landed a couple metres from her. His right hand rubbing the back of his neck while the left was concealed behind his back.
"I'm sorry." he managed to say, looking up at her. This eye contact seemed to make it harder for him to speak, so he didn't hold it long before looking away from her.
"I don't..." he stopped. There was clearly more to the sentence than just that, but his voice cracked and he was having trouble getting out what he wanted to say.
All the times he'd flown into battle with a bang baby. All those times he'd faced adversity and fought to save lives and here he was, unable to simply say something that was on his mind. He'd saved the world for God's sake. Dropping his right hand, he clenched it into a fist, steeling his resolve.
Courage Virgil.
"I really like you" he choked, face turning red again. That thumping in his chest was back but there was no stopping now.
"Since we met- I mean you're just- This whole time-" Okay, so there was stopping now. Virgil Hawkins had lost his patented ability to ramble. There was so much bottled up inside trying to spill out that it was fighting to escape and blocking the entrance.
He took a long, deep breath.
"I'm sorry I ran away." he said apologetically and revealed from behind him the bow he'd been concealing with his left hand. He knew that he was in for it. He was going to get the mother of all death glares. She may actually slap him this time. But all he could do was show how sorry he was and hope that eventually she'd forgive him.

He left.
No response.
No stuttering over words.
He just left.
WHAT THE HELL!
The archer watched in horror as she was left behind and let out a sigh as she watched him take off. The redness had drained from her face and as he disappeared into the city her eyes dropped to look at the ground.
Had she made a mistake? Read everything wrong? Should she have just waited to see if he made a move instead? How long had she been holding her breath for? Maybe he had just been friends with her because he felt that he still needed to apologise for what had happened in that first meeting?
Her head ached, now more so with how many thoughts swirled around in her head than the injury, but there was another ache. Her heart had been hammering all while she had taken matter into her own hands and now it felt like it stopped. Turning Artemis made her way over to the bench again and sat down, holding her head in her hands for a different reason. The shock was written all over her face and she was pretty sure that their friendship would be even more awkward now. If he even came back.
She rubbed her hands over her eyes. She was far stronger than that. She’d handle this rejection like she always did. Stern glare and force the feelings down. Way way down and use it as a way of fighting villains. Use it to focus and punch something. She wasn’t going to run, well if she was being honest with herself she couldn’t right now.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He returned before she even finished filing her thoughts away in her brain.
Sitting up, she looked over to him with a fierce glare, her arms folding defensively. It didn’t help that as he looked back to her and apologised that he turned away and then said two words that she dreaded hearing. He didn’t even continue that sentence either. As her eyes remained on him as he clenched his fist, she was about to say something. Had the words primed and ready which made her almost miss him saying that he really like her.
Almost.
Her glare faltered for a second as her eyes widened. Just a second. Before her glare returned. OK now her heart was hammering again. Damn it, it was going far faster than when she had kissed him. He pulled her bow around from behind his back as he apologised for leaving with his left hand and she stood. Stood so quickly that she had to ignore the dizziness from the motion.
Snatching her bow from his hand she folded it up and put it in the holster on her back, gathering her thoughts before she’d speak. Artemis hand stretched gesturing to him, her facial expression one of thunder, “like, what the hell Virgil? What do you think I’ve been thinking since you left? That you went to go get my bow?” she had to bite back the amount of venom she had in her voice but there was no stopping it, “Yea right. I thought you weren’t coming back. That THAT was your way of saying you didn’t like me at all by disappearing into the city,” she paused pushing a strand of her blonde hair back from her face, and starting to speak again before Virgil would have a chance, “I like you as well if that isn’t obvious.....”
Artemis stopped, trailing off. Her right hand resting on her forehead as she tried to figure out her next words. She felt like she had just run a marathon. She was no longer looking at Virgil and had turned looking off just to the right of him. It was her turn to choke on her words. She had no idea where she was going and she just faltered. Even the glare dropped slightly into more confusion.
Where WAS she going with this?
She let out a sigh and folded her arms again looking off to the side avoiding Virgil’s gaze, but if he looked close enough there was a smile fighting its way through that glare. It needed some encouragement but it was there, but she was too stubborn for her own good sometimes.

Virgil visibly winced when she snatched the bow from his hands and braced himself for the scolding of a lifetime. He was used to this kind of thing from his father and sister, but somehow Artemis had brought out an all new level. He physically tensed up and backed away slightly from the yelling, there was no use arguing as to his mind she had every right to say what she was.
But despite all this, despite how sorry he felt for leaving her here while his brain turned to mush, her confession destroyed any expression of guilt. It was really hard to look apologetic when you were grinning ear-to-ear like a goofball.
He had two inclinations on how to respond. The first was to be apologetic and see if he could coax her into not being so mad at him. The second was to make a joke of the whole thing and see how the dice rolled.
"And I wasn't obvious?" he asked jokingly. Comedy path it was.
"I can barely talk around you! I've been hit, more than once, because I can't focus if I think you're in trouble."" he held his arms out at his sides, opening himself up so he couldn't hide anything. If he was confessing he might as well go for gold.
"I volunteered to make gadgets for the squad so I'd be in the base more. I asked Tim to team us up together on patrols." Embarrassing for him. Now embarassing for her. "And for the record. I understood everything you said when I was a dog"
He paused for a moment, nodding at her with the same silly grin on his face. He knew he was going to be in for it for that revelation, but he wasn't done yet.
"I've been looking for a chance to ask you out for months." he said, then swallowed nervously, he was still nervous to talk about this directly, despite his current verbal torrent. "But I couldn't be sure. I thought I saw something but..."
He faltered, rubbing the back of his neck.
"I mean. You put that shield up." he wasn't blaming her. In anything the sadness in his voice should've told her that he understood why. With her situation the way it was, letting anyone close was difficult.
Deciding that if there was any time to take a risk that it was now, Virgil took off his mask and goggles so she could see his expressions clearly, then rested a gloved hand on her cheek, gently turning her face to look at him directly.
"I would never leave you alone."

Artemis could see that smile out of the corner of her eye. It was hard not to glance over when he started talking either so she forced herself to stare at the ground in front of her thinking on her replies to everything he said as he continued to talk.
Yes, but come on, how was I meant to know when you buzzed off?
I can handle myself, you know that, and I could probably still kick your ass if you had to do hand to hand that didn’t involve your powers.
Her head whipped around to stare at him. Eyes wide and cheeks scarlet, clearly horrified that he had understood absolutely everything she had said when he was a dog. That only meant one thing to her. It meant he knew how she felt. Damn it Artemis, why hadn’t you been more careful she internally kicked herself for that one. Her facial expression not dropping as he nodded, quite clearly confirming with a grin that he had. She almost immediately returned to staring at the ground again in front of her, her eyes narrowing. She was going to wipe that stupid grin....well she would if she hadn’t clammed up. Had she spoke at all? No, she was thinking everything.
She took a breath in as he said that he had wanted to ask her out for months and she could understand why he hadn’t. She was shielding herself at the minute if her facial expression and folded arms were anything to go by. Well her shield was always up in situations like this. Talking about emotions and stuff. She closed her eyes, thinking over everything he had just said. She really had trained herself to hide most of it behind, well this, but she was taking a guess that it was about to change.
She felt a gloved hand on her cheek and when she opened her eyes she was looking directly at him with grey worried eyes.
“Well, I know that now,” she replied in a whisper, with a small smile as she reached up with her hand and taking his down from her cheek holding it for a second before releasing it. Her face scrunched up, cringing as she thought back to his comment about understanding everything she said when he was a dog, her cheeks going bright red again, “so you understood everything?” maybe she could just say that she got confused with some movie she watched, that would work right?
“I was...I got...it was very sort of heat of the moment thing...I was worried and I didn’t think you could understand me considering the night before because after speaking with gear and everything you were just...you were whining so I thought you just wanted cuddles...” Artemis said, rambling until finally she sighed hanging her head and turning to look away putting both of her hands to her face in embarrassment.
It had clearly not been anything she just said. So much for that. She might as well let the world swallow her whole now. What was it she had thought about getting him back? Well that had clearly left her thoughts due to that smile and those brown eyes she had been looking into. She thought she would’ve been better at dealing with this. Clearly she wasn’t.

"Not everything. It was hard to think." he admitted. Sometimes they had had issues communicating as his brain struggled to compensate being in the body of a canine. "But the bit about how you felt..."
He paused, his grin growing to the widest it possibly could. He wasn't trying to mock her, but knowing how she was he couldn't help but find her reactions really cute.
"That part I definitely understood." he couldn't help but laugh a little as she struggled with her embarrassment. He was red in the face as well, but the comfort zone of comedy was helping him keep his rapidly beating heart in check. For once, it wasn't him that was struggling with being nervous. It was a good look on her.
"And. I mean." He rubbed his neck, not sure if he wanted to admit this next part or not. "You were really kind to me. And I liked you. I uh, I might have played it up a little..."
He tried to look apologetic. With his eyes anyway, the smirk was clearly one of pure cheek. Sure, sometimes he had found himself acting like a dog would, but in his moments of clarity he had been more than happy to cuddle up to her. He'd even managed to whine his way into sleeping next to her at night. All the things he wanted to do as a human but couldn't.
He was going to pay for that.

He was still talking about it. He was still talking about what he had heard. Her hands rubbed down her face and she let out a small groan in exacerbation. Yes, Artemis knew now that he knew about her feelings and the redness in her cheeks was not going to calm down at any point soon....
Wait, he had been playing it up?
He shouldn’t have said that to her. Artemis looked to him out of the corner of her eye before turning and giving him a quick but light slap to his arm that would sting a bit, “you played it up?” she hissed out, before standing straight, folding her arms looking him dead in the eye, a smirk appearing, “I’m going to assume for the cuddles? I’m not going to deny that you were adorable then but at this point I’m kinda wondering if I would rather have the puppy here other than you?”
